we are looking for a new digital camera. we have a cannon elph, but would like to upgrade. you know something more complicated that we'll never fully understand how to use. something that takes nice pictures, but most importantly looks cool. as an example i have been looking at the cannon rebel xti.

have you bought a camera recently? what do you think of it? is there a camera you would recommend?

just trying to get input.

thanks in advance

thanks

i've been going to a lot of different sites. just wanted to get some firsthand real life input.

The most important thing to me was to get a camera with high optical zoom. If you take pictures of sporting events or wildlife, the zoom is a great benefit.

I have an Olympus Camedia C-740 and love it. 10x optical zoom (digital zoom is worthless).

For example, here are a couple pix I took earlier this year of some guy flying near my house in a motorized parachute thing.

Normal zoom:

Same guy 5 seconds later with 10x zoom goodness:

I think this model is discontinued, but I really love it. Just looked on the Olympus site and they have some good high-optical zoom cameras at attractive prices.

If you get a high optical zoom camera make sure it has an image stabilizer like hte Canon S3 IS (the IS stands for image stabilizer). If you play around with them enough, at the high end zoom point it is hard to control the camera and keep it still. The stabilizer will help. That, or a tripod.

I have a Pentax Optio 330GS and it's a very fine little camera, although I am about ready to splurge on a Nikon Digital SLR after much thought.

I'm in the market for a new camera since my Cannon Digital ELPH went out all of a sudden.

Don't they make 3 megapixels anymore? I don't really need a 6 or 7 megapixel.

Not really. You can get a 6 megapixel for the same as a 3MP a year ago.

You don't need anything above a 4 MP camera, the pictures it takes can be blown up to a maximum size of 8"x10" which is about as big as a home user is going to need. A 10MP camera can be blown up to huge proportions, that is the only thing the MP sizes are going to do for you

You can't really judge cameras on megapixels. I have a Polaroid izone 300 (got for free for buying big screen TV) that pumps out 3.2 megapixels of crap.

I'd recommend DeAnna browse slickdeals/fatwallet for a while until something she finds a good deal for something she likes. I bought a Canon SD1000 (7.1 MP) for $149+shipping

Here's a sample picture (scaled by .25) from my camera taken a week ago at the park by my apartment:
