You don't understand...I'm trying to emulate DCR. :) Meaning, I need something cheap - I don't want to spend more than $100 on a camera that I only use occassionally.

Glad that I have the "cheap" label and it is sticking.

:biglaugh:

Have you tried craigslist?

You can't really judge cameras on megapixels. I have a Polaroid izone 300 (got for free for buying big screen TV) that pumps out 3.2 megapixels of crap.

This is the best piece of advice someone can give in regards to new camera users. I bought a 2.0M camera about 4 years ago and it was complete trash. My cell phone would take better pictures.

You really need to know what you want to do with it. I just bought a new camera and I had very specific ideas of what I wanted, primarily lots of zoom, I got 12x. I got a panasonic that was discontinued for the new model. Circuit City had a great closeout sale, I couldn't find it anywhere else so I bought it from them (I had been boycotting them).

it's 6MP and 12x and the zoom is precisely what I wanted for vacations and fishing. My girlfriends digital has almost no zoom and it drove me nuts trying to get good pics in Baja and the Philippines of orioles I was following around. I spent a week before I finally got an oriole to land close enough to me in Baja to get a good shot, now with zoom I won't need that. Will also hopefully allow me to get a good action shot of a fish jumping which I could not do with the old camera.

I'll be taking it to Baja in late July and hopefully Australia and New Zealand in Feb so it will get a great workout.

If all you want is pics of family at Xmas, BBQ's and stuff like that, you won't need anything like 12x zoom.

So now I think I'll put the old one on Ebay - if not just for the accessories. I was surprised to see that people were actually bidding on cameras that clearly stated 'were not in working order'

I know, but I still think that D40 is a killer deal for a good SLR, and I love Nikor Lenses so I have pretty much stuck with Nikon... I have 5 of them so far, I have not bought the D-40 yet though... My first one was the Coolpix 775 and it still produces great printable pix... (use it for work only now)
