Todd Gurley 4 years $60 mil $45 gtd

This negotiation shouldn’t last much longer. The framework for a DJ deal is there.
Yep. And I think DJ is better than Gurley being completely unbiased.

Give him the same and move on. Wonder what the $ amount that was being discussed before this deal.

I don't know that I'd give DJ 45 guaranteed. That will probably be the sticking point.

Since this is an extension that money is spread out over 6 years correct? I know they said he is locked up for the next 6. That would be 10mil per which I think is fair for Gurley or DJ.

DJ is 3 years older than Gurley... He'll be 27 by the end of this year (December). I think a 4 year deal that gets him to age 31 would be appropriate. With guaranteed $$ somewhere between $35 million - $40 million. If the team chose to franchise DJ for back to back seasons, they would likely be on the hook for a combined $25 million or so... which still might be the best option for the team and a most crappy situation for DJ...

Have to wait for the final details, but I'd assume he's going to get some bonuses. Before the extension, he was due to make 11.5 mil over the next two season.

Looks like he got a 20mil signing bonus. So I'm guessing he gets his rookie salary the next two years then the extension? Roughly $16.6mil per year which is crazy.

I think there is about $14M left on his rookie deal. Add $60M extension and that is $74M over 6 years.

So if my math is correct it comes to about $12.3M per year

Would the $20mil signing bonus be on top of that or is it part of the $60mil? The $12.3M per year is more reasonable imo.

DJ has zero leverage which is why he is back with the team. Holding out costs him money, and a new coaching staff means lower team expectations so ownership and the GM have zero pressure from the fans. He is trying to be a "team guy" to hopefully improve his leverage in the future. I have said this for over a year now, the Cardinals have no real reason to give Johnson a market value future contract over the rest of his career.

IDK about that. If he is even in the ballpark of his 2016 numbers, he will get the big contract next offseason. If the Cardinals stiff him now and wait until after the season the Cards could very well lose him. And, the Cardinals fan base will have a meltdown.

Personally, if I filled in for Keim, I make a big deal with injury protections. It really isn't hard to figure out.

They’ll put the franchise tag on him next season.

True. And, to be honest, if I am GM for the Cards, this really would not be the worst way for it to play out.

and potentially the next year as well. DJ would be greatly served to take a lower deal just to get some guaranteed money, but i doubt he will as his agent knows a bad team will over pay him in two years.
