That's weird since Derick Hall yesterday on the KTAR that they are only about to start interviewing next week.

I've been impressed by the job Dipoto has done around the deadline.

Today's AZ Republic says that the search is about to intensify and that DiPoto, Towers and Logan White of the Dodgers are the 3 candidates, so I like Towers chances the thing the article mentioned that money could be an issue with Towers but I think ARZ will pony up to get this guy. Maybe we can have our cake and eat it too by hiring Towers and keeping DiPoto and let him be groomed by Towers who really isn't that old at 48, but maybe he uses this to get a NY job later on.

Towers wouldn't be a bad choice. I would rather have DiPoto since I'm not a fan of retreads. That said Towers wouldn't really be a retread since he did a very good job with the Padres.

I think DiPoto has done a great job, but Towers is a really good choice. Either way, I'd be happy.

The D-Backs are getting out of debt. It would be interesting to see what Towers could do with more money than he had in San Diego.

Even though the D'Backs are coming out of the red, I believe ownership will not go on a spending spree. Hall realizes that big contracts are not going to be possible in a small market like here. The days of going after major stars are long gone. Towers or whomever gets the job is going to be working with a restricted budget. Need proof look at the shedding of Haren AND Jackson's contracts even though they told the media only one needed to go.

I think they're comfortable with a $55 to $60 mil payroll, which still buys you a veteran or two in this day and age. I don't think they'll sell out on the farm system like the Padres did under Towers.

I'm not sold on Towers. Doing some research, he is not that good at drafting players. I think we should take the interim tag off Jerry and Gibby.

Either way I think its a good move. I really like K.T he's a good dude and did an excellent job with the Padres and the limited budget most of those years. They definitely want the new GM in place come the next few weeks so they can start the Manager search as soon as the season ends.

Does "doing some research" mean "reading it on DBBP.com"? :p

I just hope that whomever the new GM is that they are smart enough to sign Gibby to a good contract. He is a class act and a solid manger that given the right talent will produce a winner.

Well looks like KT's back in town trying to work out a contract. Should get done in the next couple days. I hope Dipoto lands a GM job somewhere. I think he's going to be a good one. I hear Randy Ready could be a candidate for the manager's job. Don't know a lot about him besides of him as a player. Anyone hear any other names floating around out there?

There will be some headliners out there. Dusty Baker, Joe Torre, Bobby Valentine, Joe Girardi. I say re-sign Gibson unless Baker is a possibility.

Baker a few years ago would make you cringe at the thought of him getting his hands on our young pitching, but seems to have done a good job managing the young pitchers he's got now. A few other names that may be tossed around who are lesser knowns are Ted Simmons who many believe is a legit manager candidate around the league. He's going to manage one of the AFL teams this year and he worked as KT's assistant in the Front Office for a few years. Another one is Ron Wotus. Wotus actually has already managed in PHX when he managed the Firebirds back in the day.

Proven isn't necessarily "better".

Towers made some ok moves with the Padres (Getting Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young from the Rangers was nothing short of larceny), and he had a keen eye for pitching.. However, I also think Jerry D. should have gotten the chance to show how good he's capable of being. He did some very good things for the long term future of Arizona baseball (Hudson for Jackson alone merited him an extension).

We'll see. I'll take a cautious approach.
