Six student-athletes on The Ohio State University football team have been suspended for NCAA violations, the school said Thursday in a press release.

Mike Adams, Dan Herron, DeVier Posey, Terrelle Pryor (pictured above) and Solomon Thomas will miss the first five games of the 2011 season and must repay money and benefits, the school said.

A sixth player, Jordan Whiting, must sit out the first game, the NCAA determined.

As part of the players' reinstatement:

– Pryor must repay $2,500 for selling his 2008 gold pants, which were a gift from OSU, his 2008 conference championship ring and his 2009 Sportsmanship award from the Fiesta Bowl.......

The student-athletes will be eligible to play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on January 4 against the Arkansas Razorbacks, the university said.

Hmmm...a bit too lenient? I wonder if the NCAA will suspend them, or if it'll just rely upon Ohio State policing themselves.

This is the conclusion and culmination of a long running investigation, by the NCAA. It does reflect on the power of the BCS, as these suspended players are eligible for the upcoming Sugar Bowl.

I think the idea is right but Pryor is missing 5 games or essentially half a season for about $2500. Josh Selby only missed 9 games, or about 30% of the season for taking nearly 5k in extra benefits while in HS.

Maybe the difference is Pryor et al did this in college not HS? Otherwise it seems making them miss about half the season is beyond what they've semi established as the standard?

I guess maybe they're saying selling items you got in college is worse than what Selby did, but the NCAA has always said a significant part of the decision process is based on how much money was taken. That's why John Wall got such a short suspension last year he took less than the 1000 amount they've set as the amount over which you miss 30%.

What makes me wonder is how many of these players, other than Pryor, can declare for the 2011 draft.

The decision to suspend them for the first 5 games of next season is the ultimate out for the school, and the NCAA. If the NCAA really wanted to make a point, they'd suspend them for the bowl game.

From ESPN.com:

The NCAA said in its news release that its policy for spending players for bowl games or championship events "recognizes the unique opportunity these events provide at the end of a season, and they are evaluated differently from a withholding perspective." Lennon said the ruling in this case is consistent with that policy.

1. ESPN really, and I mean really, must get a better proof reader.
2. All 5 of these kids knew exactly what they were doing, and the impact of getting caught.

Roughly translated, "There is more money at stake in the bowl game than there is in the first 5 games of the season, usually against cupcakes."

Especially with Ohio State's schedules...

2011 OSU Football Schedule

Day Date Opponent Location Time
Sat 09/03/2011 Akron Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 09/10/2011 Toledo Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 09/17/2011 Miami (Fla) Miami, Florida TBA
Sat 09/24/2011 Colorado Columbus, Ohio TBA
Sat 10/01/2011 Michigan State Columbus, Ohio TBA

Oooooh. 4 home games.

What blows me away is they ( Pryor ) are still lying about it. Astounds me that players think NCAA investigators just fell off the turnip truck.

The hiprocracy of the NCAA. :bang:

Ridiculous!!! Pryor will get off scott free once he enters the draft & the Bucks will likely win a BCS game because he is in the lineup. All teams cheat & receive a slap on the hand, that's exactly why they should bring the death penalty to habitual caught cheaters ala SMU!!! The cheating will never stop until the NCAA wants to stop it.

OSU would probably want them suspended the bowl game rather than 5 next season. Pryor should still go bakc to school. He's not getting drafted early. Maybe they should just say their dad did it and they knew nothing. Works for the SEC.

The differance in the SEC & the Big 10 is your suspended at the spot of the infraction. It's complete BS Cbus!!!

You're not comapring cheating in the $EC to the Big 10 are you?. I'll be honest I've been playing poker all day and only heard bits and pieces of what has happened. 5 games sounds like a pretty stiff penalty to me considering it's well know Newton and his family got 150k, minimum, and he'll miss nothing. I'd rather have those guys miss the bowl game. Who really cares about The Sugar Bowl this year?

Not comparing the 2 at all. It's just another poor attempt by the NCAA to stop cheating & I'm sick of it. They all cheat & we know that, but it seems differant teams get differant penalties, that's all I'm saying. To watch the Bucks AD on TV, say "We didn't tell the kids it's illegal to sell merchandise we give them". What a complete joke!!! I know it's illegal & I played college sports 25 years ago. Pryor even sold his Fiesta Bowl ring, which says alot about that guy. Again not attacking your beloved Buckeyes, but the NCAA.

BTW, OSU should man up & suspend those cats before the bowl game IMO

so they are admitting lack of institutional control, which is normally a biggie.

tOSU should get minimum two year bowl ban. Any non-BCS school would.

Couple things

First, I disagree with the rule. Players should be allowed to sell their own possessions with no consequences. It's not illegal. If they did it after they graduated, no one would care.

Second, the NCAA is really getting questionable with it's ethics and discipline. It's clearly choosing money over ethics. Letting Newton off the hook was one thing (seriously now saying "I didn't know my parents were taking bribes" gets you off the hook). Now it's letting these kids play in the important game and potentially not get punished at all (if they go pro).

Third, I bet all these kids go pro. I do believe that Pryor can be an NFL QB with years of development, but I have no interest in him for the Cards. He's the type of QB who needs to go to a team like NE or Indianapolis or NO and sit behind an elite QB through his rookie contract. If teams want to draft him at another position, I don't know. He's athletic enough to be a WR. Big enough to be a DE/LB. He doesn't have the personality of a defensive player though.

As for the other players involved, if they go pro, I'd be interested in Mike Adams if I was the Cardinals. He could be a late round gem. He was a 5 star OL recruit.
DeVier Posey will probably be the next in a long line of Buckeye WRs to succeed in the NFL. If we lose Breaston and Doucet, I'd take a flyer on him as well.
"Boom" Herron is your typical practice squad RB. He's 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Doubt he has the tools to be a starter anywhere.
Solomon Thomas I think will come back for another year. He still has a ton to prove. If not he'll probably be an interesting UDFA. He has talent, just hasn't been on the field much.

So if OSU, USC etc 'gave' rings worth $100K each, that would be ok??

If you are for that, then, cut the BS and just advocate paying them outright.

The NCAA has a fixed number on how much a team can spend on stuff like that. I think it's less than $1,000 per peson.
