Not quite. There were 31 teams in the NFL in 2001. The Texans joined the league in 2002.

The Steelers did forfeit a 3rd round pick, and the 49ers a 5th round pick for salary cap violations. The Raiders haven't forfeited any pick since 1981.

Thanks for the correction. I forgot about that year where the Cards had a bye week in week one because of the odd number of teams in the league.

Brees???
He was the 32nd player drafted that year but it was the first pick in rd2. A team had to forfeit their 1st rd pick, IIRC it was the Raiders.

This was a subject that came up on a thread about 3 years ago that enticed me to do some research. I forget the exact results but SB winning QB's were by far and away 1st rd picks and many of those were top ten picks.

The number of QB's with SB appearances was also incredibly high. The results surprised me because the names Montana & Brady leaped immediately to mind since they have about 7 SB wins themselves. Kinda the exception that proves the rule that you need to draft a QB early in rd1 to have a legit shot at the prize.

Preaching to the choir. 3 of those SB wins were with a #1 overall pick at QB, Eli twice and Peyton. Only Brees and Brady have won the SB since 2007 that weren't 1st rd picks. Brady, Montana & Warner are the glaring exceptions that really skews the stats away from taking a QB in rd1.

That 2004 draft was a great QB class. Eli, Rivers and Big Ben (picked 11th overall).

Yep, that sucked! Even worse, the year was 2001, so the season started (without the Cardinals) on September 9th. After September 11th, the games of week 2 were postponed until January 6th, so the Cardinals didn't play until what was supposed to be week 3, on September 23rd!

Obviously there were much bigger problems to worry about at that point (such as the fact that i got married on the 7th!) but that quirk just added to the surreal vibe of the time.

Well for anyone doubting our penciled-in win in JAX, you can breathe easier. Justin Blackmon has been suspended for 8 games for violating the substance abuse policy for a second time.
