ASU tailback Wade arrested in deadly shooting

The Arizona Republic
Mar. 26, 2005 12:15 PM

Arizona State University football player Loren Wade is in custody and expected to be charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of former ASU player Brandon Falkner outside a Scottsdale club Friday night.

Brandon Falkner, 25, of Tempe was shot in the head as he sat in his vehicle outside club CBNC, near McDowell and Scottsdale roads.

Wade, 21, fired one round into the vehicle after exchanging "sharp words" with Falkner, who then drove several hundred feet across the parking lot, struck another vehicle and hit a tree.

Falkner was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn, where he was pronounced dead.

Police say Wade went to the club about 2:30 a.m. to pick up girlfriend Haley Van Blommestein but approached Falkner's vehicle when he couldn't find her. Detective Sam Bailey of Scottsdale police said it was unclear whether the men knew each other.

Wade is a moron who should have been booted from the program last year. If you're going to get drunk, leave the piece at home. My thoughts are with the Faulkner fam.

Oh yeah.... and I just wanted to add that I hope this little incident helps push along the resolution in the Arizona Legislature to allow people to carry guns in an establishment that serves booze. Can't wait to go to Applebee's with my 9mm!!

What a joke.

Very sad.

I think there's more to the story. They had to know each other. Maybe there was a love triangle going on or something?

Regardless of the college they were linked to - sad story.

Just shows the times we are living in... :|

He threw away 2 lives in a matter of seconds.

Throw the book at him. Life imprisonment is too kind.

I think you are right. Falkner(retired ASU DB) and Van Blommestein(retired ASU Soccer player) went to ASU at the same time together.

This idiot Wade(Sophmore Football Player) shows up to pick her up, she is talking to Falkner, Wade freaks out in front of his 3 buddies.

The thing I wonder is why is Wade showing up with his 3 buddies, and caring a gun? Is he picking her up or looking for trouble.

Obivous answer.

Wow, didn't hear about it until now, how crazy.

Didn't wade marry that women who took out that line of credit? (for a short time at least)

What a crazy person...After everything he's done he is officially "two fries short of a happy meal." (maybe three)

His suspension last year really hurt the team...and he still didn't learn. KOC said it best.

Well mr. wade now you will have a lifetime of pink underwear ahead of you. And the only ball you'll carry is your bunk buddie's Cecil B. Gay. Hope it was worth it idiot. (I'm trying not to go off, but he's going to get what he deserves). Here's to you being in TENT city for the rest of your life.

Falkner was probably talking to someone he had a class with or something and hadn't seen for a few years and wade went psycho. Poor guy.

Hey wade, odds are you weren't going to be with her in 6 months anyways. So I guess it was all about respect or something? How pathetic. You killed someone for your pride, here have a pacifier it'll get you used to what you'll be in prison.

You had plenty of wake up calls and nothing did. Well now you don't have to wake up, because the state will be directing your life from now on and you don't have to worry about all the little things you weren't supposed to do, because you won't be able to anyways.

No way that gun bill gets passed now, and if it does it'll show you the true colors of whoever passes it. (What an idiotic bill to begin with)(Or was that bill a sort of "give the fish some slack bill before the crack down on the nightlife after a few incidents"). Hey I'd like to institute a bill allowing cigarette vending machines on school campuses....yeah about the same level of common sense.

Falkner's family has my blessing. Hopefully that girl can get over this. Wade well you are wading up shipp creek without a paddle.

It is truly a sad, sad time for ASU athletics, and today I am ashamed to be a Sun Devil  :hulk:

Gambo's Take:

Killing, Wade's arrest will scar ASU for years to come

It's unfortunate that one man's actions have the ability to bring down an entire program. But that's exactly what happened to Arizona State basketball after a point-shaving scandal involving Stevin "Hedake" Smith came to light in 1997. It cost coach Bill Frieder his job and set the program so far back that it still hasn't recovered.

Loren Wade will likely have the same effect on ASU's football program. The running back was booked on a count of murder Saturday night in the shooting death of former Sun Devil Brandon Falkner. While the Sun Devils had clearly turned the corner last season under head coach Dirk Koetter, what transpired Saturday night is going to be devastating to the program because these types of problems don't just go away on their own.

There simply is no sugarcoating this. Loren Wade is going to jail for a long, long time. And unfortunately, ASU is going to suffer the consequences for his actions. The reality is, Wade was a Sun Devil. He represented Arizona State. The news reports don't say Loren Wade is being accused of first-degree murder. They say Sun Devil football player Loren Wade is accused of first-degree murder. This is bad, especially when the video footage of him being hauled off to jail has him wearing shorts that bear the Sun Devil football logo.

Just how this will affect the Sun Devil football program is up for debate, but clearly there'll be ramifications. Opposing coaches, assistants will be spreading the word about this murder to recruits because in the battle for top high school talent, recruiters look for every advantage they can get. Parents may now think twice about wanting their child to play for Arizona State. Prominent high school football players may be told to steer clear of ASU.

Did anyone else just hear Bill Fieder on the radio? He just said that, while he was at ASU, he was told they had recruited too many blacks. He said he was trying to be more balanced in recruiting just before he was fired. Too many blacks? Balanced? Huh? They went to a commercial before he could say anything else.

Did he say that people at ASU had told him that he recruited too many blacks or did he say he say, "I recruited too many blacks?"

He said someone told him he had recruited too many blacks. He said that is why he brought in Lazor, Pruitt, and Kendall (forgot the exact name, I think it was the guy who later went on the Mormon Mission) to try to become more
"balanced. " All the above are white.

Sounded really bad to me.

Someone at ASU better get control of this thing before it's turned into a Baylor-type situation. If there's any sort of wrongdoing happening in the athletic department over there this is just the type of incident that will uncover it.

I used to do Valet at CBNC every now and then. Every car we valeted seemed to have a gun in it (not exagerating). This doesn't surprise me in the least, its just a shame 2 lives can be ruined in one instance.

Wade had threatened others, ASU officials say

Jeff Metcalfe and Dan Bickley
The Arizona Republic
Mar. 29, 2005 12:00 AM

Arizona State University tailback Loren Wade, accused of murdering a former ASU football player, verbally threatened at least two ASU female athletes in the six months since being suspended from the team for an NCAA violation, officials say.

Outgoing ASU Athletic Director Gene Smith said he knew of a threat against gymnast Trisha Dixon in November and learned Monday of a threat against former ASU soccer player Haley van Blommestein that was handled by ASU head football coach Dirk Koetter.

Wade was picking up van Blommestein at a Scottsdale nightclub at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when he shot Brandon Falkner, authorities say. advertisement

Smith and ASU gymnastics coach John Spini said Monday night that there was no gun mentioned in the verbal threat against Dixon on Nov. 24.

Additionally, The Republic learned that on March 6, less than three weeks before the shooting, soccer coach Ray Leone called Koetter about a verbal threat against van Blommestein that included Wade possibly having a gun.

The latter threat came during the weekend that Smith was at Ohio State University to be introduced as that school's new athletic director, which apparently is the reason it was not immediately relayed to Smith.

Dixon said Wade called and threatened her after she told a friend that she had seen him with another girl instead of van Blommestein. That information got to van Blommestein, and Wade learned that Dixon was the source of it, Dixon said. She Dixon said she took the threat to Spini, who contacted Smith and Koetter.

"It was a serious threat," said Dixon, who would not say if it included mention of a gun. "He told me to move from where I was at, that he was going to come and get me. He pretty much threatened my life."

Wade later apologized to Dixon, Spini and Smith, each said.

"All he (Wade) said was 'Stay out of my business,' " Smith said Monday night. "There was no mention of a gun at all. The reality is those aren't signs to say this guy is going to shoot somebody. That's a real stretch."

Spini said: "I felt comfortable because my athlete felt comfortable (after the apologies). Trisha never had another incident.

"She (Dixon) was scared enough to come to me but not scared enough to go to the police. I had to respect her wishes, but I was concerned."

Dixon said part of her motivation for going public with the threat is because of her respect for Falkner.

"I get annoyed with so much focus on Loren," she said. "Brandon was an amazing person. He was one of the few guys you could say was a great guy. . . . "He was not a guy to start anything or any confrontation. That's why this is so shocking. He's not the type of guy to get into arguments."

Leone said that he went to Koetter when some of his players told him there was a problem between Wade and van Blommestein and that Wade might have a gun.

Koetter said he called Wade's mother and asked if she knew of Wade carrying a gun.

"Two hours later, Loren calls back," Koetter said. "He's crying his eyes out. He said he was breaking up with Haley right then. I asked him to put Haley on the phone. I said, 'Haley, this is Coach Koetter, just answer yes or no. Are you in any danger right now?' She said, 'No.' "

Van Blommestein went on to tell Koetter that Wade did not have a gun and that she had never seen him with a gun, Koetter said.

Despite the incidents, Wade was allowed to begin spring practice on March 21. He participated in three practices before the shooting.

"The way he handled it, I thought was perfect," Smith said of Koetter.

Smith's last day at ASU is April 14.

I don't see where the athletic department was wrong. If the women were "so threatened" why didn't they call the authorities themselves?

They felt threatened enough to tell their respective coaches and athletic department officials. I agree that that nobody could have truly known what Loren was capable of, but you have to admit this looks bad in retrospect considering the university apparently knew about three separate damaging incidents (one of which allegedly included a gun) and yet Wade somehow remained on the team.

I agree with the above post. We could not have thought he was capable of murder but there were big red flags. Wonder if the administration looked the other way since they were short on running backs
