Peter Jackson announced today they have added 50 additional minutes and 300 additional special effects scenese into the Special Edition release. Puts the movie at a tad under 4 hours.....

I wonder what they are putting back in? Sarumon's death scene which was noticably absent from the film

I can't wait. I did hear there are some scenes between Sarumon and Gandalf that were cut from the theatrical release and would be added to the extended version.

Not to ni-pick but wouldn't 50 additional minutes put the run time over 4 hours? I thought the theatrical release was 3h 20m.

Probably right, I was just going off what I heard on E! News Daily

Did they even film Saruman's death? I know they didn't do the Scouring, so how would they do that?

How about Frodo and Sam's capture and march with the orcs?

I think thats awsome news...I just hope it doesn't turn into a star wars thing and they begin to add digital characters like ewoks or something....

I don't think you have to worry it will be in the same vein as the other extended versions.

They were very well done and are the only versions I purchased.

When is the release date, does anyone know?

I believe they did do the Scouring but it was cut out from the theatrical version due to time issues.

Nope...they never even considered filming it because Peter Jackson, self-proclaimed 'Lord of the Ring', didn't like it in the book

I was going to post something about that, but then I figured you would show up eventually to set him straight. :)

It was filmed, but it was left on the cutting room floor, this is why Christopher Lee was pissed and didn't show up at the Premiere of the final movie. Jackson didn't want to film those dead guys that Aragon goes and gets to help kill everyone

I bought the trilogy, and still have no freaking clue as to what is going on in these movies..May take awhile as may attention span for movies that are beyond earthly reason is very low....Took me 10 times before I understood the Matrix.

Bzzt...incorrect. Try again :D The earlier Saruman stuff was left on the cutting room floor, but the scouring was NEVER FILMED. Here...

Peter Jackson was asked about it, and here's what he had to say.

It's a damn shame, though I'm sure it's for pacing rather than for any other reason. I'd expect Saruman to be back in the extended DVD edition. channey: I believe the scouring of the shire (or whatever it's called, it's been a while since I read it...) has been CONFIRMED as not being in the film at all, never mind the theatrical cut. It's not like it's a five minute scene they can quickly bolt back :) - I assume this means you won't even see Frodo, Bilbo etc cross the waters...

That's the first one I ran across...I read many others, including several that quoted Jackson as having always hated that part of the book, and using THAT as a basis for not even filming it...like I said...'Jackson of the Rings'

At it again, eh Stout? lol

I honestly think that part of the book drags on...granted, I like it, and I love the entire book, but I can see how you read it, think it's over, and suddenly it keeps going.

The only real reason to have it would be the killing of Saruman.

But anyways, I'm fine with it the way it is, I'll just read the book for the true version.
