I put that on Rolle, he could have stuck his foot out and tripped Harrison. :D
Funny, but not so far-fetched.

Had a sideline player tackled Harrison it would have been a personal foul, +15 yards from the spot of the foul. With the clock having run out, or very near to it, Pittsburgh would have been given just one play from the resulting spot. Very unlikely that it results in a touchdown; a field goal maybe...

 Oh, well!

You would think they would just award a TD.. If it was just a 15 yard personal foul, I would think you would see more "oops my foot was sticking out" plays on runaway kickoff and punt returns.

I'm not 100% certain, but I don't think that would be following the rules. Of course, the player coming in from the sideline would most probably be ejected from the game also, suspended, fined etc. Not practical on a routine basis; but man, just this one time!

It probably is addressed in the rule book somewhere. In fact; I don't recall if it was a college game or the NFL; I remember seeing an old video of a player doing exactly what I am talking about.

Physics question based on this: If Graves had to negotiate with himself on a new contract, would time stop?

:lmao: 5/5

I don't care who you are that there is funny.

LMAO and I actually support Graves.

A touchdown CAN be awarded for a "Palpably Unfair Act".

Touchdown Awarded (Palpably Unfair Act)

1. When Referee determines a palpably unfair act deprived a team of a touchdown. (Example: Player comes off bench and tackles runner apparently en route to touchdown.)

Thanks, dave! I figured someone would find it.

I didn't realize that they do have the "Digest of Rules" on the NFL.com site: http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/digestofrules

I found this there also:
Penalties for Unfair Acts

The Commissioner’s powers under this section (UNFAIR ACTS) include the imposition of monetary fines and draft choice forfeitures, suspension of persons involved, and, if appropriate, the reversal of a game’s result or the rescheduling of a game, either from the beginning or from the point at which the extraordinary act occurred. In the event of rescheduling a game, the Commissioner will be guided by the procedures specified above ("Procedures for Starting and Resuming Games" under EMERGENCIES). In all cases, the Commissioner will conduct a full investigation, including the opportunity for hearings, use of game videotape, and any other procedures he deems appropriate.

So pretty well covered.

Now I have to review some of the old NFL Films videos I have. I need to find that clip I am thinking of; a player came off the sideline and tackled an opposing player. It's pretty funny to see it happen.

Then again, I might be recalling a scene from the Marx Brother's movie, Horse Feathers. :?

Question: Have these rules ever been applied in an NFL game?

That's why I want to find that clip I am thinking of, and see if the narration makes a comment about the TD being awarded.

Any "old-timers" or NFL films/history buffs that can recall the event, and would like to comment, will be appreciated. :)

I believe you're thinking of the 1954 Cotton Bowl when Alabama's Tommy Lewis came off the bench to tackle Rice's Dicky Maegle. Rice and Maegle were awarded a TD on the play by the officials.
