BATON ROUGE — For the fourth straight season, LSU women's basketball has advanced to the second round of March Madness.
The No. 3 seed Tigers (29-5), fresh off a 103-48 victory over San Diego State in their NCAA Tournament first round game, will meet No. 6 seed Florida State (24-8) Monday night (5 p.m., ESPN2).
Kim Mulkey and LSU tied the program record for points in an NCAA Tournament game with 103 against the Aztecs. Star guard Flau'jae Johnson, in her first game back after missing the last three with shin inflammation, posted a game-high 22 points while Aneesah Morrow recorded her 28th double double on the season with 12 points and 12 boards.
Here's what you need to know ahead of LSU's matchup with Florida State with a Sweet 16 berth up for grabs Monday:
LSU MATCHES UP WITH TA'NIYA LATSON Who guards Ta'Niya Latson for LSU in March Madness matchup? Kim Mulkey has options
WHY FLAU'JAE JOHNSON BLOWS KISS TO CROWD Why LSU star Flau'jae Johnson blows kisses as a celebration
Not many teams have been able to do it so far this season but LSU will need to find a way to limit Ta'Niya Latson, FSU and the nation's leading scorer.
Latson averaged nearly 25 points per game and she has the ability to beat teams in a variety of ways with her game. She's one of the top dribble-penetration players in the women's game currently, she has more than enough strength to get inside, battle and finish through contact as getting to the free-throw line is where she can inflict serious damage.
But she can also step out and hits 3-pointers while creating space for her off the ball.
It'll be interesting to see which player or players from LSU guard Latson but Mulkey has plenty of eager volunteers.
Mulkey knows Monday night will be a challenge. The Tigers matching up against Latson is the second straight year they've met the nation's leading scorer in March Madness. LSU faced Iowa and Caitlin Clark last season in the Elite Eight and lost in Albany, New York as Clark dropped 41 points.
"What do we need to improve on? " Mulkey said. "Well, I'm going to always say defense. Make your free throws. We're getting ready to play a very talented Florida State team, leading scorer in the country. We've got our hands full.
"They have so much length and they alter shots, and they're athletic. They just get over screens, and they run. It's going to be quite a challenge for us. I hope we're a challenge for them."
LSU had its best 3-point performance of the season against San Diego State, going 10-for-18 for 55.6%.
Johnson made four 3-balls, including her first one to open the game, while Williams and LSU point guard Shayeann Day-Wilson each hit three apiece. Williams went a perfect 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
The Tigers started out hot, making 6 of its first 8 3-point attempt before going 2-for-10 the rest of the way.
After the game, the players credited their ball movement in offensive sets for their perimeter shooting efficiency and they aim to carry that over into the matchup with Florida State.
LSU 94, Florida State 89: High octane matchup between two prolific offenses in LSU and FSU. Latson will get her points but the Tigers will do enough of slowing down her teammates that the Seminoles can't quite catch up. LSU moves on to the Sweet 16.
