Macklin versus Barrett......did we upgrade?

Comparing the two from a career perspective, they are remarkably similar from a stats perspective. Both players are identical in size (5'10" and approx 200 lbs.); were both drafted in 2000 (Macklin late in the 3rd round, Barrett early in the 4th); each have approx the same amount of tackles (190 and 184); the same amount of INT's (7 and 6); the same amount of fumble recoveries (1 and 2)........the comparisons are ever so close.........with this glaring difference. Macklin has 45 defended passes versus 25 for Barrett. This tells me that Macklin has better coverage skills which is something that we desperately needed to upgrade at the CB position this year.

Other differentiators between the two is the success in post season play. Macklin has performed at a very high level in playoff competition. Barrett has not had the same chance. Macklin has benefited from quality coaching, Barrett has not. Macklin knows about a "winning attitude", Barrett has not experienced the positive that winning can provide. Dungy was desperatly hoping that the Colts could somehow find a way to keep Macklin, Arizona was not so determined regarding Barrett.

All in all, there doesn't seem to be too much separation between the two on paper but I'm guessing that Macklin performs at a much higher level than Barrett, going forward.

If Duane Starks can play the whole year healthy........with Hill in the wings, all we need is for one of the depth chart players to stand up and be counted ( my guess is Jason Goss) and we might get through the year in OK shape. Next year, we will need to address the CB position again, either in FA or with our #1 pick regardless....

Good piece Spanky! One thing not mentioned in your comparision... I believe that Macklin has got more speed than Barrett. Definately an upgrade!

But the play of the secondary is going to be very dependant upon how well Starks plays.

Macklin is a small upgrade over Barrett, I think. Part of the PDs, I'm willing to bet, is that the Colts have had a better overall defense, even pre-Dungy, than the Cards have. Macklin benefitted from having Dwight Freeney streaking around the corner the last two seasons and providing wicked pressure. The pressure forces more bad passes, as well as allowing Macklin to stay closer to the receiver, and thus allowing him to break up more balls (it's possible that Macklin has the same "stone hands" that tend to mark second-tier corners).

Plus you have to take into acount that Macklin is 2 years younger and 1.2 mill cheaper per year. Average per year for Barrett, 3.6 mill, average for Macklin 2.4 mill.

I say we got the much better deal when taking the price into account.

What the Jets are paying Barrett is a joke. Macklin showed solid improvement last year, hopefully he'll continue that trend.

That doesn't wash... they sucked. Colts defense pre-Dungy was pathetic.

• 1998 They lost five double-digit leads
• 1999 The 2-2 start featured two games in which the Colts failed to hold large lead. They took a 28-7 lead in Week 2 at New England before the Patriots rallied for a 31-28 victory and two weeks later, they led the Miami Dolphins 24-15 in the fourth quarter before losing at Indianapolis, 34-31.
• 2002 The Colts, despite starting 2-0 and eventually reaching a 4-3 mark, struggled throughout the season on defense. The Colts finished 29th in the NFL in total defense, and during a five-game losing streak that ended any playoff chances, the Colts allowed 27, 34, 40, 39 and 41 points. Throughout the course of the season, the Colts allowed 40 or more points four times.

Only last year did the Cardinal defense match the 1998-2002 Colts defense in futility IMO. Also, during these years the Colts had a high powered offense. So it wasn't a situation like with the Cardinals that the defense was constantly finding itself in a hole, having to defend a short field.

But we agree, "Macklin is a small upgrade over Barrett, I think."

Did we upgrade? Definately, you can't teach instincts, and Macklin beats Barrett hands down in that department. The Jets got bent over on that deal, and it's nice to see other teams in that department instead of us constantly.
