With many of the pro days in it's time for my third Cardinal Mock draft. I really don't want the Cardinals to draft a QB early this year. I just believe there is way too much talent in this years draft to reach for a questionable QB early. However I wouldn't mind drafting a QB later, which is what I do here:

You must be registered for see images

1) Corey Davis - WR - W. Mich
This is my guy. I've been pimping him for a couple of months now. With this most likely being Fitz's final year now is the time to bring in his replacement. Davis would get a full year learning from one of the all time great WRs. Davis is a beast. He has the Size speed and route running skills to be one of the best WRs in the NFL.

2) Budda Baker - FS - Washington
Baker is often compared to Tyrann Mathieu and they even both wear #32. He may be undersized but Baker is a playmaker very much like the Honey Badger. At the combine he ran a 4.45 forty. Is there such thing as a herd of Honey Badgers? Or maybe a Pride of Honey Badgers? I don't know but I sure would like to find out!

3) **** Tabor - CB - Florida
A pedestrian 40 has sent Tabor's draft stock tumbling. However his tape doesn't lie. This confident DB would be given a chance to earn a spot opposite from PP.

4) Chad Kelly - QB - Ole Miss
The Nephew and godson of HoF QB Jim Kelly. Off field issues and a knee injury have caused his draft stock to fall. However he has all of the tools you want from a QB. Very athletic and is a dual threat. Would need a year or two to learn the offense.

5a) Julie'n Davenport - OT - Bucknell
The Cardinals love to find gems from small schools an they think they have found another one in Davenport. This kid is raw but has all of the physical attributes you look for in an OT.

5b) Wayne Gallman - RB - Clemson
The unsung hero of the Tigers stellar season. Gallman will get you the tough yards. Because RB is so deep in both FA and the Draft this year I believe that RBs will slide some this year as teams fill up early on the positions that are not very deep. This will mean that a RB like Gallman could drop into the 5th round.

6) Xavier Woods - SS - La Tech
Hard hitting safety. This kid is always around the ball and is an amazing ball hawk. La Tech coaches all rave about him and his work ethic. He is the kind of player who Steve Keim loves. This is another kid who loves football and will do whatever it takes to be great.

7) Antony Auclair - TE - Laval (Canada)
This is another small school prospect from Canada of all places who would be a project at TE. He started generating buzz after the East West Shrine game where he made some plays an looked the part. He can catch the ball and is a good blocker.

Nice work, but taking a WR in the first round with the holes we have just doesn't sit well with me.

I also would much rather take Kizer, Mahomes, or Watson in the first before taking fellas like Kelly, Peterman, Webb, & Kaaya in later rounds.

I like Davis alot, but feel that a low value pick at #13 because of the deep WR class. Is Davis that much better than Isiah Ford or Zay Jones or Cooper Kupp, who can be taken in later rounds?

at #13 Id much prefer the best CB available. CB is generally a position that must be taken early as there is a sharp dropoff in talent

There will soon be a big hole at WR as well. Why not take a guy who could be the heir apparent to Fitz and give him at least one season to learn from the best.

From a BPA viewpoint, there are two ways to develop a mock:

1. Base it on how you rate guys on your Board

2. Base it on how you think other teams will rate those same players.

The second way is more realistic but more difficult because (1) it's hard to read other teams' minds & approaches to drafting and (2) it's hard to be completely objective when laying out how you think other teams will draft.

When I do a 7-round draft (for Cardinals only) I've always taken the lazy way out and ranked players on how the Cards might rate them and then picked players on that list who were within 3 or 4 players of #13, #45, #77 etc.

My point - There are many ways to skin a cat (few, if any, perfect).

FYI - BRS 2017 Draft Issue is on-line at azcardinal.com (Cardinal is singular - no "s").

My latest mock asumes 3 QB's will go early.

- Niners at #2 are said to be in love with Kizer.

- Bears at #3 don't have a starting QB

- I think the Jets (sans Geno) at #6 will spring for Trubitsky

I also think Bears are more likely to leap on Watson than to reach for Mahomes

As for the Cards - No I don't think Mahomes is their QBOF. I think it will more likely be Foster or C Davis at #13.

Davis seems like a safer pick than any of the QB's. Now if one of the QB's turns out to be another Dak Prescott, then I'll be bummed. But which one?

I really like the idea of Xavier Woods late in the draft. He can play day one and bring similar skills that Jefferson had.

I think JJ Nelson will be the only receiver under contract for 2018. So not so much a need this year but next year....

Yep.

That is exactly why now is the perfect time to bring in a young stud WR to learn from Fitz. It usually takes at least a year for a rookie WR to fully adapt to the NFL. Davis should have an instant impact but it would be nice for him to have a year as secondary target before he becomes the primary when Fitz eventually retires.

I would be totally down with Davis but I would not draft him for this reason, stud WRs are not as hard to acquire compared to pass rushers, cornerbacks and quarterbacks. If you think he is special though, then you draft the guy

.

Mike Glennon is the bears starting QB. Paying him 15 million per. Mark Sanchez is backup..Not drafting a QB. Watch out for New Orleans and Cleveland to snap up Mahomes and Watson at 11-12.

And how did perform in his other games against big schools? One middling performance doesnt mean he shows up.

That was the only game I watch this year where he played against a top college team.

I remember in 2015 he played against the #1 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes. He had a decent day catching the ball with like 6 or 7 receptions, but the Broncos offense was overmatched. That OSU Buckeyes team had 3 players on that defense drafted in the first 20 picks last year and they could add 4 more players in the first round this year. I do remember one specific play from this game, a WR screen for a 1st down, where Davis blocked 2 DBs and pushed them both back at the same time. It looked like those DBs were on roller skates. Things like that don't show up on the stat sheet but are important as well.

My top positions of needed weighted by team need and importance:

1) QB. Sure some state that Palmer could play a few more years, I wouldnt bet the future on it. The Cardinals desperately need talent behind Palmer. My preferences: Mahomes and Webb.

2) WR/passing targets. I can buy the argument to take Davis. Only JJ under contract for 2018 means the Cardinals need another good young cost controlled receiver. I think if the Cardinals don't want to draft a QB in round one, I would be inclined to take whoever is available amongst Davis, Williams, and Howard. Each has their strength.

3) CB. I would be more inclined to draft a CB later since this position is deep, but I could see the Cardinals drafting one early.

4) ILB. I'm not a huge fan of using a high pick on one, but the team is particularly weak.

In the Cotton Bowl this year against #9 Wisconsin, Davis had 6 catches for 73 yards and a TD.
I like Davis but this is a case where the stats lie. He was a non-factor in that game. He caught about a 40 yard heave and hope lob very late in the game for a TD.

That was an amazing catch that brought the Broncos back within one score late in the game. Having a clutch play like that in a huge game is just another plus with this guy.
