I think the issue is that he was told he was not gong to be a starter. Why else would he clear out the Cardinal pictures from his site. I'm seeing some tweets from football insiders saying that this is a Cardinals/Butler issue not family. Cardinals have kept silent on this.

If that's the case then good riddance. Starting spots are earned, not ordained.

How would he like it if he played the best ball but someone else got the job over him?

I'd be surprised if this is the case though. The Cards still hold his rights. Only an idiot would burn $3.5m and end their career because they don't start game 1. Especially as he was still guaranteed to play 60%+ snaps.

Does anyone know much about Madre Harper from the Giants? Played in 9 games last year and Giants fans don't seem to be too happy about him getting cut.

So the question is how long do you give him before you just straight cut him? Doesn’t his salary become guaranteed at some point if on the roster?

If he's upset with the Cardinals and threatening retirement, who cares. At worst, the Cardinals get back the $3.3 million in cap space. Who knows - he might even be tradeable for a
5th or 6th round pick.
I don't see how Keim carries any blame for a guy who apparently can't earn a starter job. The Hicks situation is a little slimier IMO. But not this one.

Gilmore is still on PUP & will arguably miss the first 6 weeks. There’s gotta be other CBs that are young & possibly have potential that you guys know. Gilmore ain’t happening.
Yeah... Just saw this.

People are panicking way too much over this.

1. Butler may not retire.
2. If he does he wasn't looking like starting anyway.
3. When we signed him we hadn't drafted 2 CB's. One of which looks pretty decent.
4. There are FA options available that can fill that role. No need to sell the farm on a trade.

It's not ideal but not the end of the world.

Our CB room wasn't ideal WITH Malcolm Butler in it; it's well below the level of "not ideal" without him.

Because he's literally the GM who signed the player to be a starter?

Holy moly so much assumptions and attacks on assumptions.

We have no idea why he cleans the Cardinals form his social media. If he's retiring for personal reason, maybe he removed it since he actually never player a real down for the Cardinals!

It's all assumptions and appears the Cardinals are even confused.

THIS.

We don't know and some are running on a bunch of speculation.

We can gather from what happened in training camp and the preseason that Butler was falling down the CB depth chart. The Cardinals often were running Alford and Murphy on traditional defense, and moving Murphy into the slot when in nickel.

I'm more worried from a depth perspective now. This means that someone like Gowan will see PT this year, and he didn't look especially ready. He didn't look Kevin Peterson bad though, and Peterson played a little last year.

I don't know why everyone seems upset that this is a Cardinals vs Butler thing.
I mean, look at the Patriots - Cam thing. Cam was the starting qb a couple of days ago and now he's released.

Sounds like an NFL thing to me. It happens for whatever reason.

If it’s a personal matter, by all means take care of it, no issues there. If he’s upset about not starting, why quit? Take your 3m this year and laugh all the way to the bank.

His $3.5m is guaranteed. I'm guessing he's mad about not starting, but wants his release...Cards are asking for $ back and he's saying no, thus forcing his retirement hand. If he retires, he keeps his money, but Cards put him on Reserved/Retired list and hold his rights and he can't sign anywhere else. If they release him, he keeps his money, but can go wherever he wants and double dip, unless there was any offset language in his contract with Cards. Butler holds the $, but Cards hold his future career.

Our CB room is pretty damn atrocious lol let’s not overthink this.

- A CB that hasn’t played real ball since 2018 & was already falling off before that.

- A CB in his 3rd year that hasn’t fully turned on the switch just yet.

- A CB that is a rookie who had inconsistent college tape & while played solid in preseason, went against QBs like Ben DiNucci & Shane Buchele. I have hope, but let’s relax.

It was already bad with Butler, but eesh, this is just another level.

I think whether you weren't worried about the CB room or you think it was detritus, losing Butler isn't an insignificant blow.

Butler isn't a star corner, but he has shown that he can play in the NFL. There are 100's of CBs on NFL rosters who can't really play in the NFL, so when people bash Butler they aren't really seeing the forest for the trees.

Best case scenario now is that Murphy takes the next step, Alford bounces back and plays at passable level, and Wilson is a serviceable player in year one. That's three IFs, and doesn't leave much margin for error.
