Studio: Universal Pictures
Director: Phyllida Lloyd
Screenwriter: Catherine Johnson
Genre: Comedy, Musical, Romance
MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some sex-related comments)

Plot Summary: Meryl Streep leads an all-star cast in the feature-film adaptation of the beloved musical that has been seen by more than 30 million people in 160 cities and 8 languages around the world. Bringing the timeless lyrics and melodies of iconic super group ABBA to movie audiences, Summer 2008 is the season for "Mamma Mia!"

The three women who created the worldwide smash stage hit--global producer Judy Craymer, writer Catherine Johnson and director Phyllida Lloyd--repeat their roles in bringing this joyful, musical story to the big screen. The Mamma Mia! film is produced by Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman.

Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper join Streep in this celebration of a mother, a daughter and three possible dads.

An independent, single mother who owns a small hotel on an idyllic Greek island, Donna (Streep) is about to let go of Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited daughter she's raised alone. For Sophie's wedding, Donna has invited her two lifelong best girlfriends--practical and no-nonsense Rosie (Julie Walters) and wealthy, multi-divorcee Tanya (Christine Baranski)--from her one-time backing band, Donna and the Dynamos. But Sophie has secretly invited three guests of her own.

On a quest to find the identity of her father to walk her down the aisle, she brings back three men from Donna's past to the Mediterranean paradise they visited 20 years earlier. Over 24 chaotic, magical hours, new love will bloom and old romances will be rekindled on this lush island full of possibilities.

Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA's songs from "Dancing Queen" and "S.O.S." to "Money, Money, Money" and "Take a Chance on Me," Mamma Mia! is a celebration of mothers and daughters, old friends and new family found.

Sounds like an episode of Maury Povich: "One of these three men fathered your child. The DNA test results are in..."

Supposed to see this next Tuesday. I am really looking forward to it as musicals are one of my favorite movie venues. Guess that's only natural being raised in the 50's when musicals were at their zenith.

I saw the musical in Las Vegas with my wife and was actually surprised that I enjoyed it.

Looking at the cast of the Movie I'm guessing it will be pretty good also. I'm sure my wife will want to see this sometime soon.

They're running a promotion for the opening weekend for this movie. I guess the first 500 people to buy a ticket get a free "Mama Mia!" t-shirt.

From what I read this afternoon, 497 are still left.

Wow. It looks like I'm the first guy on here to see this movie. Went this afternoon to Palm Valley Cinema on Litchfield Road.

I give the money 4 stars out of 5. The only reason it isn't a pefect 5 is because they allowed Pierce Brosnan to sing. Otherwise the movie was an unqualified success. I have never really liked Meryl Streep, but after this movie she is one of my favorite actressess. Her singing and dancing were great. She looked like a 30 year old the way she was bouncing around.

It was a great plot and the music was absolutely perfect. Of course, I am a great fan of ABBA and I'm sure that helped form my opinion. The theatrical numbers were crisp and extremely well done. The majority of the singing was good, but didn't rise to excellent. They had most of the cast back at the end to do a couple of numbers (almost like an encore) which I think were unneccessary and not as entertaining as the rest of the movie.

If you like feel good movies with fun, comedy and happy endings, you will love this movie.

All in all, I would recommend this movie.

Edit: I forgot. Colin Firth fans will be very surprised at the end of this movie. I won't say anymore. Go see for yourself.

How in the world did anyone see this this weekend over Dark Knight? It did a respectable job too.

how in the world is this the movie that makes you like Streep? :)

My type of movie and she was excellent in it. For two hours I didn't think of anything but what was happening on the screen and when I walked out of the theater, I had a smile on my face and a song in my heart.

To tell you how bad Brosnan's signing was, my wife said I could have done a better job.:D

Not sure if any of you have Sirius Radio? On channel 3 they have been spotlighting ABBA and Mama Mia for the past week or so, interviewing the entire group, as well as the entire cast of the movie... Awesome stories... Tremendous tales of how they got to where they are, and how the cast were fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and get selected...
To hear the cast speak about their experience in making the movies, you can't help but feel that they walked away believing this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. One of the most enjoyable projects they have ever worked on - including Streep...
She in fact recounts the story of when she had just moved her family to NYC on 9/9/01 to put her kids in a new school. Of course 9/11th happens and the city and the country comes apart... She took her kids to see Mama Mia on Broadway on 9/13th and was immediately placed into another world... She talked about walking out of the theatre, dancing and singing the whole way home...
I have to admit, after I saw it on Broadway, it's hard not to minimally feel good, if not joyous as a result... I'm looking forward to seeing the movie and to introducing my kids to a special brand of music....

I will have your man card now, 82.

Dude, this thread is littered with man-cards.

I have a stamp on my man-card that says "exempt from revocation due to appreciation of opera, musicals and the theatre."

It was very hard to clear with upper Man-Card management.

Did you have to get Fernando to sign off on it?
