Wow, that was fast.

I'll be very interested to hear the financial details. If Marbury was willing to accept a somewhat modest contract -- even just a regular max deal, instead of an "overmax" deal -- it has the chance to help the Suns a lot down the road.

Elind,

Just forget about the money for a second, and don't denounce it because you think it interferes with the future.

Colangelo takes care of his players. That's a helluva lot more you can say about the powder puff flag football team we have down the road.

Be grateful we have an owner who is PROACTIVE.

In this case, I don't care about the money. If the Colangelos want to build a $80 million payroll, I think that's fine. But we all know that they won't.

"Don't denounce it because it interferes with the future"? I'm not sure what you mean by that. This extension is all about the future, one way or the other. The future is either to invest the entire payroll in three players, or it is to set some money aside for a supporting cast. The Suns are choosing the first path. I think it's a mistake.

In the grand scheme of things, is Marbury "worth" $100 million over five years, among other NBA players? Maybe, maybe not. But what does everyone on this board say about Garnett and Minnesota? We all say that Garnett's huge contract will prevent Minnesota from getting to the next level. Is Marbury so much better than Garnett that the Suns will escape the same fate? I don't think so.

Colangelo takes care of his players... Be grateful we have an owner who is PROACTIVE.

To what aim? If you're going to be "proactive," you need to have a goal in mind.

Tell me how this will help the Suns win a title, and I will be convinced. We all know that it won't. It will help the Suns be good and exciting and happy for many years, and it will prevent them from being great.

So, you're saying the Suns don't have a goal in mind? You don't think they thought this over before they signed on the dotted line?

Surely, you're giving this organization more credit than that...

Strange, a few guys today have really gone crazy about a couple things, namely this extension and the Mutombo thing.

It's like they're not even giving the Suns the benefit of the doubt that they really know what they're doing.

Oh, I think they definitely have a goal in mind. Their goal is to put on the floor an exciting, above-average team that draws enthusiastic fan support and makes the playoffs every year.

And I think they will succeed at that goal. It is a worthy goal, and many teams (and fans) would be happy with it. It sure beats losing, being boring, or having no identity. And it ain't bad for the owner's pocketbook, either.

But apparently their goal is not to compete seriously for the championship.

Great move by the Suns and especially Marbury.

I'm trying not to be too much of a homer, but I expect very good things from this team within the next 2 or 3 years.

I definitely agree that this is too much to pay Stephon Marbury. Like you I also believe it's going to be nearly impossible to build a championship team unless they are willing to spend the money to do so. If Shawn Marion, Stephon Marbury, and Amare Stoudemire are all making maximum money in four years they will make a combined $40 million. That doesn't leave much room for error in putting the rest of the team together.

The Suns will make money fielding a championship contender as long as they stay under the cliff provision.

Let's be conservative and say that the cliff provision will be $65m in 2006. At that time, the Suns will have Marbury, Amare (5th yr), Marion, Zarko and Barbosa (both 4th yr) under contract for less than $40m. That means that the Suns will have as much as $25m to spend on three or four players to fill out their rotation.

The Suns could potentially afford another (ready to expire) max-level contract and a mid-level contract, to go along with three or four more Colangelo draft picks and a couple of cheap veterans. If that isn't enough to build a 'great' team, the extra couple of million that Marbury is making that year won't matter, anyway.
________________

I agree that a 5 yr/$100m extension for Marbury is an absolute killer--six years from now, the team's payroll will be a bloated mess, and Marion and Marbury have probably signed their last contracts with the Suns. Thanks to this extension, we can now see the end of the "window of opportunity" for this group of players; the team will have to be broken up if they don't win a championship by 2007 or 2008 (or even if they do).

However, the current Suns team is going to reach its potential before then--within two or three years. Not re-signing Marbury is the only thing that could prevent that from happening.

So, yes, I believe that any extension Marbury signs at this point will bring the Suns closer to a championship, even the maximum overmax (which can't be much more than the $100m they're going to pay him).
___________________

It annoys me that Marbury (apparently) wasn't willing to re-sign unless he received the same $$$ as Kevin Garnett got from his contract extension, plus one dollar.

I guess if you backed me into a corner, though, I would admit that I'm not surprised. :(

Who ever reported 5 years 100 mil is wrong. That is the most it can possibly be and what was writen in the papers. However on the radio they have been calling it a 4 year extention and the amount won't be known until the NBA lets it out since the Suns don't disclose the amount of contracts as part of team policy.

AP says it was 4 years, from 76 to 80 million per. Pretty much the same as 5 yrs 100 mil.

Thanks. I feel he deserves it I was wondering if he'd take less though.

It will make a huge difference in 2009. I seriously doubt that Marbury will command $24m from any team by then.

The Suns may have to choose between Marbury and Barbosa in 2007 or 2008, and if they choose Barbosa, Marbury's shorter contract will make him much easier to trade...

Wow thats a lot of money...but I read on this board a few days ago someone wanted an extension from some team next year and they would get either a 5 or 6 year 126 million dollar contract for the max. Probably was 6, but if it was 5.....

So if we get him 5 for 100 its a little better than that...If you sign him now its less over the long haul.

Even when he finishes the contract in early 09, he'll barely be 32. Maybe we'll get a discount then as even though pg's generally start slowing down then, not always.

Maybe he'll take a pay cut after this contract, maybe same with marion. Of course wishful thinking, but it does happen...see lakers. How many players AFTER getting 100+ million dollars in salaries ever take the money and run....I haven't seen one. At that point and at that age, winning matters.

Of course they want a championship, but if we give them all this money now when they are young, and they are still relatively young when the contracts expire, it is possible to sign these guys for a whole lot less when they are still pretty darn good at 31-32 years old and be able to add some good players then. Until then we have a GREAT shot to win any year they remain healthy.

They could chose to not spend some of the cap relief when googs and penny's contract comes off the books. Or they could to get an aging veteran center or whatnot to bridge the gap.

It is alot of money, but marbury is worth it.

With kidd on the floor you need three more scorers to be competitive, with marbury, just two more....and we have them, after then its defense defense, and injury depth. We have 7 years to find these guys just based on the contract, possibly 3-5 years more after that but odds go down.

We must not forget one thing, how many good teams win big when they have a premium pg, premium sf, and a premium PF...plenty...

Think shaq will be as good in 05-06 or 06-07? Probably not. Maybe even before then. This young team took san antonio deep and we could have won the series. With david gone, and the lakers aging, except kobe (who might not be around anyways), who out there has some great young talent that has been proving themselves to be great? The suns, and no one else. You could say clippers, but most of their high picks or whatnot turn out to be duds, but they are the closest, and I see a big gap between us and them.

I'm not forgetting dallas, but nash is making noise about max contract, and he will be 30 years old during the season, finley is 30 and will be 31 during the season, dirk is young so they have him to build around, but you catch my drift.

Our guys played almost to their level last year and are 5-7 years younger, with amare even younger than that.

Well we have them now at their age, and they're good, and at their age, they are ALL going to be better barring injury.

We don't have to worry about marbury bolting or marion hooking up with kidd now. We're locked in.

We have amare for at least another 3 years, and I bet he gets an extension like this too.

With these three all you need is roleplayers and a good center and young backups and they could become dominant for YEARS.

Yes the good center part is hard, but who knows what carbakapa does, or who else is out there. The rest is relatively easy when compared to getting the great players part. Even then who besides the suns have such a great track record at getting steals of the draft or at least great value picks...7-12 years to get 1 or 2 more good/great players. We might already have one in carbakapa, but I haven't seen him yet, but he is intriguing.

What I do know is young impact players don't grow on trees, most teams don't even have 1 okay maybe 1 on average when you consider marbury's age, but we have 3.

They are like the big 3 in dallas (from 90's kidd, jim jackson, and god someone else) except they are ALL good. NO all GREAT.

Sticker shock true, but I bet its worth it later. There will be no holdouts or bad locker room jealousy, because our big guys are all PAID IN FULL...

We were shackled by penny and googs contract. Well did anyone think we could keep our young core, get those guys off the books and be able to spend top dollar for more guys?

Its impossible, its the nature of the business. We invested wisely in our top players who are already near the top in the league. We were expecting too much. But instead of having kidd and a couple of cap albatrosses and trying to put out the fires w/o many draft picks, we got studs under contract and now have many years to build around. In fact we owe only one pick now, and have one as trade bait or finally get with cleveland sometime.

We are in the best position to win championships down the road that I have seen in a long time.

We have three guys who should be in the top 3-5 at their position for their best part of their careers...think rockets in mid-nineties but with about 7-8 years MORE time. Like drexler, hakeem, and barkley in '85-86 through '95-'96. Thats what we are in for. We ARE the future of the nba.

We will be good this year, and possibly great. I can't wait for this season to start.

What's the "cliff provision"? Do you mean the luxury tax cutoff? If so, it will almost certainly be lower than $65 million, unless, as Joe Mama has pointed out, it ceases to exist. That would be good news for the Suns.

Your numbers for 2006-07 are way off. Here are the right ones:

Marbury -- at least $18 million
Marion -- about $14 million
Stoudemire -- at least $10 million (his extension will have started)
Cabarkapa and Barbosa -- about $4 million combined

That's $46 million for those five players. And if the luxury tax is still around, the cutoff will probably be more like, say, $58 million than $65 million. So that's $12 million for the rest of the team, not $25 million.
