I don't mind as much as I mind him playing for the Polish National team and THEN playing in Russia.
This obviously hinges on what happens in the NBA. If no NBA games get cancelled, then Gortat won't be playing in Russia.

I do wonder why he would choose Russia and not some better European league.

They're not that bad... For example, UNIKS Kazan won the Eurocup last year.

I can understand Gortat's decision. Following a breakthrough year in Phoenix, ofcourse he wants to continue playing, these might be his prime years.

Thought the Russian league was like the Greek league with a couple power house teams and other teams being sub par. As far as I know the Spanish league is considered much stronger top to bottom. Hard for me to say, but Spanish league games seem to be televised in the US more.

I bet the tam in question is CSKA Moscow just based on the amount they are willing to spend on players.

Russian league is much stronger than Greek league, even before crisis. now, when Greeks don't even have powerhouse clubs left as both Panathinaikos and Olympiakos are on the brink of bankruptcy...

Very doubt that CSKA Moscow could be that team. This year they've announced that they changed their spending and team building habits. they're investing more in local youth. besides, they're lineup for next season is pretty much set.
also, there are no lack of high paying clubs in Russia as well as high level competition, especially with all international leagues (Euroleague, Eurocup, VTB league) their clubs are playing in.

My immediate concern, of course, is injury. But beyond that, it's his call and I imagine the pay will be a big part of it. Seems like from what we know of Gortat, though, he would want to be somewhere that furthers his development.

Upon the premise that I think there will be an NBA season, I wish Gortat would be resting up during the off season especially since he has already gone through big man training. However, it's hard to fault someone wanting to make money. Now all the Suns need is Steve Nash playing in China. It would be sad to see Nash end his career with the Suns this way if no NBA season is played. I too worry about injuries.

Apparently Gortat's agent is refuting the report that Gortat has agreed to play for Spartak Saint Petersburg.

Per HoopsHype:

Agent Guy Zucker refuted reports that his client Marcin Gortat is headed to play in Russia next season.

“I can assure you that the story claiming that he has reached an agreement with Spartak St. Petersburg of Russia is incorrect,” Zucker said. “While I have a lot of respect for Spartak St. Petersburg and its GM, Alex Karvanen, Gortat has not signed with or reached an agreement with Spartak St. Petersburg or any club whatsoever.”
