Hey, I'm an ASU fan but I've never thought Grice was more than a marginal NFL prospect. He's not exceptionally quick, does not have exceptional moves or straight line speed. On a given day, he could do well. But, he's no long term answer. For any NFL team.
Yet, as the saying goes. . . He has a nose for the end zone!

Marion Grice's turn to play for Arizona Cardinals? 'It's a dream come true'

http://arizonasports.com/40/1779345...y-for-Arizona-Cardinals-Its-a-dream-come-true

Are you ready, Marion Grice?

With Stepfan Taylor out nursing a strained calf, Arizona will need someone to back up starter Andre Ellington and help shoulder a bit of the rushing load.

There's a very good chance that responsibility will fall on the former Arizona State star who was signed off the San Diego Chargers' practice squad in late September.

"Marion will slide up the depth chart," Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said, adding that fellow back Robert Hughes will also be in the mix. "But yeah, Marion will be the next guy up."

Grice was selected in the sixth round of the 2014 draft by the Chargers after accumulating 1,675 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground and another 863 yards and 14 scores as a receiver in two years in Tempe. He turned 41 preseason carries into 167 yards, but chose to leave San Diego's practice squad for Arizona with the guarantee of being on the 53-man roster and with it, what appeared to be a better chance to play.

It took a while, but the chance seems to have finally arrived.

"I feel pretty good," Grice said Friday. "Just been waiting patiently and stuff like that, proving to the coaches that I'm learning the plays and everything and I'm coming along pretty good. Just getting the opportunity every day just in practice to show that I'm learning the plays and I'm ready to go and stuff like that.

Feels weird that they stole him from the Chargers and haven't even played him.

Why get him then?

Next man up...

The majority of late round picks are not ready to contribute right away, so it's a roster shuffle. We lost wr Powell because we couldn't find a extra spot behind a loaded WR corps. With Dwyer suspended, Ellington still ligthly hurt and Taylor more seriously hurt we could spare a roster spot for having insurance at RB.

Grice scored 38 TDs in a year and a half in college. Not too shabby if you ask me. Thats Heisman material in the SEC.

He's fast, shifty and a great receiver out of the backfield. He is a little light at 207 lbs and tends to run very upright instead of hunched over the ball. I think he is a great pickup, my only complaint is he is a more of an Ellington-style runner than Eddie Lacy-style.

This is a good description. Grice is fast or at least game fast. When he went down for the Sun Devils due to injury, their offense really struggled.

Was I the only one slightly nervous when he got his first carry?

When you're trying to put the icing on a win, that didn't seem like the right time to see if he and Palmer could stay on the same page.

I was a little scared he got the ball simply because giving to a rookie on the fly who has not been on the team or league long can fumble, but huge thumbs up for holding on to the ball and then the score no matter the distance!

I was worried only because he is still getting his feet wet with the Cardinals. He is a talented player.

Running the football is the easy part. The hard stuff is knowing the offense and understanding the blocking schemes in pass protection. Grice is not the next man up until they trust him in pass protection.

You weren't the only one, I was also. After thinking about it though I just chalk it up to BA being BA. He never plays scared and the payoff is that it increased Grice's confidence, while at the same time reinforcing the next man up philosophy throughout the rest of the team. He expects his players to make plays, no excuses, and I think he reinforces that all the time with stuff like this. That's my thoughts anyway.

If nothing else, to me it promotes the team concept. Coach gives the ball to a guy who's been on the team for a couple weeks. Grice was picked up for a reason. Coach used him for that reason.

Definitely wouldn't go as far as suggesting that he "ran well"... But, he did what he was supposed to do - which certainly beats the alternative.

Man, you are a relentless Grice diminisher.

Frankly, I am pulling for the young man. Like many, he has had some tough times. He loses his brother during the season of his junior year. Senior year, broke his leg ending his season. Still hung in there through it all put up great numbers overall. He's got a lot of courage and just keeps fighting.

how did he not run well?

He wasn't given the chance... Not that there is anything wrong with that...
He didn't run well... And he wasn't an embarrassment. He simply did what he was supposed to do which was not turn the ball over while giving Ellington a breather...
His TD was nothing special at all. We'll gladly take it of course, but again - he merely did what the vast majority of backs would do - which is punch it in from the 1 foot line.

And no - I have no axe to grind with Grice. He's actually a very good kid. I just have serious doubts about his ability to ay at the NFL level and IMHO, he did nothing today to make me feel otherwise...

he had a 5 yard and 4 yard gain before two goal line carries. I thought he moved well on those. limited yes but he had more pop than I expected.
