Former Cardinals' assistant Larry Marmie was named as the Rams' new defensive coordinator on Sunday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. Marmie replaces Lovie Smith, who is now the Bears' head coach. Marmie and Rams' head coach Mike Martz worked together at Arizona State for seven years in the mid-1980s. "I worked with and for Larry for seven years," Martz said. "He probably has had more of an impact on me professionally than anybody. I'm thrilled and excited that we have an opportunity to bring Larry to St. Louis." Martz added of Marmie's recent experience, "Probably one of the more impressive things about Larry when we played the Cardinals is that his guys played hard all the time and were very disciplined. They didn't lose because they weren't well-coached."

Martz believes that Marmie will run a lot of the same schemes that Smith ran, and the Rams will have many of their key defensive players back in 2004. With Leonard Little, Adam Archuleta, Aeneas Williams, and a handful of young linebackers and defensive backs, the Rams should be in line to once again be a high-scoring fantasy defense next season. They may not be the best at stopping people, but the Rams get sacks, create turnovers, and score touchdowns with their

Plus that legendary "rush 3 and drop 8" soft-cover zone in passing situations late in games.

I wish Larry the best - and maybe it will turn out that it wasn't him at all - maybe he was being overruled by Mac.

But my guess is that there will be howls of pain in StL next year.

If you wanted to pick someone who was "bad" with the Cards and then better elsewhere, you couldn't have picked a worse example. His only Pro Bowl was in Arizona.

Larry Centers was good while he was here, and good when he left :roll: Its not like this magically happened....look it up

Marmie is not an NFL DC, he couldn't even hack it at Arizona State when he was the coach there. I think we know what we are talking about, we have been watching him in some way or another in Arizona for about the last 10 years. Come back here and talk about it after next season and you will understand

Martz says....the (marmie's) defense played hard and was well disciplined....they did not lose due to coaching.

well...perhaps play hard is correct...he must have made the rest of the statement as part of some comedy routine he has or something...when I think of our defense I think of:

1. Predictable.
2. Not aggressive
3. players rarely improved once they got here (lack of coaching perhaps?).
4. the worst scheming and disguising what you are doing in the NFL.

how about that complete collapse against the rams late in the 4th quarter that allowed them to tie the game in arizona on the last drive..we had them on the ropes...backed up on like the 10 yard line....we suddenly stopped blitzing and had our corners 10 yards off the line of scrimmage...wham...3 plays later they are well within field goal range to tie the game....Martz must have missed that series..

I was just perusing a Rams forum....quite hysterical:

(1) Marmie will be fine they say.....look what he did to Bulger....duh...like who didn't intercept that dude.

(2) They pulled a quote from Peter King or some writer saying Marmie held a sinking ship together or something like that.....deck chair arranger on the Titanic...."20 Something" is not a new sitcom....it describes Marmies D.....Marmies D never made it past there.....well he did....goin the other way.

(3) My favorite thread was FIRE MARMIE NOW....guy just wanted to get it off his chest.

That sucks for the Rams. They will now have an incredibly slow to act and conservative defense. He'll probably also use the same signals he used here in Arizona so our offense will know all of their audibles. Expect some high scoring games next year RamsFan....

Marmie Sucks!

I am a lifelong Ram fan and I feel this is the worst thing that could have happened to that D. I attended ASU during Marmie's "career" there. All I have to say is he must have some photos of Martz' wife to get this job.
