Falcons adding another veteran receiver

After spending big money on few starters, the Falcons Wednesday continued bargain-hunting for roster depth when former Cardinals wide receiver Martay Jenkins agreed to a one-year contract with the team.

The 6-foot, 206-pound Jenkins, who is expected to sign a one-year deal for the minimum $450,000, could offer considerable help. A five-year veteran, he is noted chiefly for his speed and return skills. He caught 21 passes for 250 yards and a touchdown last season, when he played in seven games before breaking a collar bone. He also returned 20 kickoffs for a whopping 28-yard average and a touchdown.

Oakland, Buffalo and Dallas -- where Jenkins began his career -- also pursued the former Nebraska-Omaha star.

What?
If he left here for the minimum what was our offer? I thought it was around 1.5 mill.

Are my recollections way off or is Marty a moron?

What????

The league minimum???? $450,000??? What's that mean???

Is Martay Jenkins stupid or did the Cards entirely blow him off?

Were'nt we offereing $800,000 per year?

GEE WHIZ-I thought that we were only 1 mil apart over the 3 year deal-I hate to lose this guy due to $300K??? And he signs for 450????

What is this world coming to?

Losing him hurts but he is no better than an average #2 WR and more likely a good #3 WR, the Cardinals still need a #1 WR and would have had he signed with the team.

I am more and more afraid they will draft Andre Johnson in the first round and something about him really worries me, I am not sold on him being anything really special anytime soon.

Personally, I see Martay as a #3 receiver at best...forever and always

If this is true, bye bye Martay:wave:

No love lost here...

Kasper and Gilmore are very capable replacements for Jenkins, he was too inconsistent and fumbled kickoffs way too many times, I will not miss him.

Smith's signing could help attract other free agents, although it hasn't affected the decision of receiver MarTay Jenkins.
An unrestricted free agent, Jenkins said he has agreed to sign a one-year deal with Atlanta, rejecting the Cardinals' multiyear offer.
QUOTE]When told of Smith's contract, Jenkins quipped: "If I couldn't get it (money), somebody had to."[/QUOTE]

If He can't get the money.....?? Who the hell does Martay think he is.....He will float away like dust in ATL and we will not here much more about Martay in this league!

This guys and idiot![

Losing Mar Tay eats into what little depth we have left at WR. But Gilmore, Kasper and McAddley are at a par with Mar Tay talent-wise and have more potential.

He was a #2 WR on his best day and really only a #3. The problem is now we need not only a #1 but a #2 WR now as well and the Cards have not went after anyone yet. I don't care how many WRs we draft none of them will do squat this year. We should have gone after guy's like Curtis Conway and Kevin Dyson for at least the short term. I don't understand why we have not even attempted to get a decent receiver. And this all could have been avoided if Boston was tagged.

Martay was more experienced that Kasper, etc and more ready to contribute.

I'm not going to lose sleep over his loss but let's not be silly and pretend like this won't hurt at all and he was a bum.

The repeated use of the phrase "He was a #2 receiver at best" is nonsensical given the fact that his departure leaves us with no #2 receiver.

I'm shocked, I really thought he would be back. I know he wanted 3 million per year but I always thought that he was only worth about 1.5 million per year. Him signing for minimum just doesn't make sense.

I guess he is banking on a break out season but I really think he may have just shot himself in the foot. He is taking a big gamble.

Maybe it was the heat!

It just does not make sense, unless he just wanted a change. Just one yeart. He could get injured again and have no bidders next year. He was decent - good speed, good returns (most of the time), but that occasional drop ball problem tooke hime out of being a consistent #2. Bottom line - Atlanta got a bargain!

One of my good friends who I used to sit next to at Cards games characterized Mar Tay as "Az(-Zahir Hakim) with Hands." Mar Tay is not Hakim with hands. Az cannot be a #1 and probably not a #2. Mar Tay and Az have in common that both are very, very good #3s, but I don't think are consistent enough in routes, toughness, and moxie to be #1s or #2s.

Mar Tay will probably be a #2/#3 in ATL, playing in the slot in short yardage/running situations with Brian Finneran as the flanker, but move outside opposite Peerless Price on passing downs, to provide more "stretch the field" threat. It's possible that Mar Tay could have a season next year, if Price proves to be a legitimate #1, that would make teams look at him in 2004.

The real loss in Mar Tay is that we lose the investment that Sully's made in him the past few years, and a WR that knows the system. It's pretty obvious that we're sticking with Jerry's Kids next year, for better or worse, and I'd feel more comfortable with a 4-wide shotgun of Gilmore, McAddley, Kasper, Jenkins than whoever we have at 4 on the depth chart now.
