Wouldnt that mean there was production????? Anyway, nobody said this guy would be a 1,000 yard reciever but he is a #2 reciever on an average team and a #1 on a team like the cardianls. Who is out there or who do we have that is a legit #1 WR. The market this year is weak on WR that is why he is demanding 3 mil because he knows teams will fork it out. I dont think he is worth 3 mil but if thats what it takes then do it. I am not confident throwing out Kasper and McCaddley on opening day. I would rather have a gadsden and Jenkins. The cards do not look like they want to sign a FA WR and they wont use a 1st rounder on one so that means we have to sign our own guys.
I find there's a number of points here that I really don't agree much with. first of all, as a few have pointed out, I don't see Martay as a No. 1 or "featured" receiver at all. He did show some improvement last year, which I credit Sullivan, again, for. I'd like to see Martay back, not so much for his receiving skills, but as KR and special teams player.
I also question your logic a little as you throw Kasper and McCaddley's names out as the starting WR's. I really doubt that will be that case, no matter what happens. Gilmore was ahead of them in the rotation before he was injured, and Sullivan really, really likes him. As long as he comes back from the injury he would most likely start before either of them would. I will now predict Frank Sanders will be back too. So I don't see much of your scenario as being very probable or realistic at all.

The best we have is an aging #2 (Frank), a #3(Martay), and a bunch of 4s and 5s. Maybe with another campl Martay may be a #2 and the rest of the guys bump up to 3s and 4s. But that is about it. I thought that the WRs got some good experience and would be a help this year. But with losing DB we are in a world of hurt.

The Cards need to make an offer to Jenkins now!

I like Jenkins and I see him departing and he will get more than we will offer. The bleeding continues. This is like a snowball going downhill. It is getting bigger and bigger and we are going to have more and more problems signing people or even keeping the guys we have. I do not know what is going on at Cardinal Headquarters but if I were them I would be dam concerned.. Even the Bengals have signed someone. I sure would like to know what Graves plan is. If it is wait until spring training then I am not sure my heart will hold out Rod.

I don't care what he does on special teams - 3 million? Hell i'd rather see us throw three million at Conway - at least he's proved he can do soemthing in this league.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/stats?statsId=4843 - 3 million?

Cheesebeef: who would you pay $3 mil to that would come here? Unfortunately money cannot play wide receiver. You got a better choice? throw it out there.

The NFL never pays for past

performance. Teams pay based on what a player is expected to do in the future.

Ergo, Martay Jenkins is worth a bundle and somebody will pay it.

Our problem is if you get past McAddley and Gilmore, you've got Soliday, Ezekiel Parker, and Nathan Poole.

I never said he was a #1 but if he were to come back and there were no other additions he would be the #1 reciever. With that said if noone signs who do you think will be the starting WR's? Gillmore is no where close IMO to kasper and McCaddley due to the fact that he is behind due to injuries. Kasper came in very late and was clearly the best WR down the stretch, imagine if he had camp with the cards. I love McCaddley, Kasper and Gillmore but those guys are 3's and 4's at best. On any other team they would be special teamers. Frank Sanders may be coming back but that is not final and shouldnt be thought of as. Even if he comes back he is getting up there and what would his role be? He would have to be the #1 and i dont think he would work well like that. He is more comfortable being the guy who gets the open looks because the star reciever gets doubled. He does not work well in traffic and hence would have a hard time being the #1 guy. Sanders is a possesion reciever and it is proven that possesion guys most of time do not fare well as the star wideout (wayne cherbet). This team may have to use a second round pick on a WR, and that is what this team just does not need. They should be working on defense but due to the offseason circumstances are forced to go that way. I am not mcginis but i would be worried about the offense if i were him.

you know what sucks...martay gets cut from another team and never makes their roster (I think cowboys) we pick him up and he is raw and gets some great teaching from sullivan..we make him the #3 and give him an opportunity..now it is like..hey..we watched the super bowl and learned all former cardinals are future probowlers on a bad team...so someone gives martay some crazy $$$ and we lose a guy that we basically trained and it is questionable if he would even be in the NFL if it were not for us giving him an opportunity...yea..I know..happens every day..but it still sucks. I hope we get him back..but I would rather have sanders at his price (not much) than martay at $3 million..

I would also add that if you exclude special teams..I would rather keep gilmore and mcaddley over jenkins.. they just need more experience..which they will probably get with us..

Jenkins issues as a KR were in his 2nd year with us, this past year his average was in the top 3rd of the NFL. No fumbles this past year either. So as a KR he is very good and our best option.

Jenkins is our best gunner on punts. Gilmore was also playing very well at this position until he got hurt. When both of these players went down our punting unit was horrilbe. Remember they gave up punt returns for TD's in two consecutive games. The Cards yards allowed per return sky rocketed and now a team that had to punt far too often and couldn't stop teams defensively was also losing the war on field position.

I'm not sure what top players on special teams usually make on a team but it has to be at least 1.5 mil per year. So I do think Mar Tay is worth 1.5 mil as a WR and doing the math he could make 3 mil per year.

What most teams have figured out in FA is that you develop and keep your own talent. Otherwise you become like the Redskins and Broncos and continue to mess with a teams chemistry while over paying for players who didn't give them the impact they had hoped for. Some key signings is what most teams try to accomplish each year while resigning their own players.

As Cards fans we keep bemoaning the fact that are young talent moves on to excell on other teams. Mar Tay has shown enough that he could turn out to be one of those players. If we have to over pay a little for him now it is worth it.

The good news is that RG is starting to address this issue in a proactive way, the extensions of Wakefield and Shipp speak to that.

Maybe RG can get Mar Tay a contract with some bells and whistles. This would be another amazing step in improving how the Cards front office handles these types of situations.
