If you read the article it breaks down how they do it...its the top 100 GMs in the 4 major sports which is what like 120? Matt Millen is 96 out of 100...Rod Graves is 69 according to their rankings only 8 Gms are worse than Graves in the NFL and Millen is 3rd from the bottom.

Its not the TOP GMs in sports its a ranking system of all of them.

But I have to question how Ozzie Newsome and Mike Brown are rakned below Graves though.

It's simple. Forbes is a money magizine. Their ranking system is based on how well the GMs handle the money. I'm guessing that they didn't include much on how well the team actually did in the wins department. Instead they probably looked at ticket sales, contracts, etc.

They did, nowhere in there did it say Graves or Millen were among the best GMs in sports...they listed the top 100 from the 4 major sports...if you JUST look at the NFL teams Graves is 8th from the bottom and Millen is third from the bottom.

The rankings were looked at without looking at the details of it.

"Our rankings compare each general manager to the final three years of his predecessor's tenure in two categories: (1) performance (regular season winning percentage and playoff win totals) and (2) payroll spending (relative to the league median). Performance counts twice as much in our scoring as payroll spending. Scores account for all teams where the GM held the office and are indexed to 100. A score of 120 in winning improvement means the GM won 20% more games than his predecessor. A score of 80 in payroll containment means the GM spent 20% more than the previous GM relative to the league median"

If you read that it means that Rod Graves has not improved our winning percentage compared to the previous GM (Ferguson?) and that the team now spends 4% more than it did then (as compared to the league median).

Matt Millen by contrast has a winning % that is 45% worse than his predecessor and spends 4% less.

Edit: Its only 98 total GMs as explained here...

"Only the 98 current GMs with at least three years of service were reviewed."

So Millen being 96 out of a possible 98 doesn't make him one the Top GMs in Sports...quite the contrary. Graves being #69 isn't exactly a shining example either.

This seemed to be from a business perspective and even then it didn't make a whole lot of sense. Glad I don't regularly turn to Forbes for my sports advice. Hopefully the Mr. B doesn't either otherwise Matt Millen could be on his way here. jk

Minnesota salaries have climbed 19 percent more than the median NBA salary during his tenure.
