The 2025 offseason is barely a month old, and the draft hasn't arrived yet, but there doesn't seem to be much faith in the Dallas Cowboys. Not only have many of the fans soured on their team, but the people setting the odds also aren't buying into what Jerry Jones is selling.

According to one betting site, not only are the Cowboys are not expected to make the playoffs, but they are also projected to be one of the worst teams in the entire NFC this season. The site gave Dallas just a 33% chance of making the playoffs, good for the 13th-worst odds in the conference. Only the Carolina Panthers, New Orleans Saints, and New York Giants have a lower chance at making the postseason, according to these bookmakers.

It's early in the offseason, but that's a rough outlook for the Cowboys. The team is just one year removed from three straight 12-win campaigns and two NFC East titles, yet their odds are worse than the Atlanta Falcons, Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers, teams who haven't made the playoffs since 2017, 2020, and 2021 respectively. The 2024 season was one in which the Cowboys had a high number of injuries that affected their ability to put a winning team on the field, including quarterback Dak Prescott.

It's also interesting to note that Prescott is one of the best QBs in the NFC, just one season removed from being an All-Pro and finishing second in the MVP voting, yet apparently the team won't be good enough to come close to competing for a playoff spot. QB is the most important position on the field and the Cowboys have one of the top performers at the position, but teams that don't have signal callers as good as Prescott ahead of them with their postseason odds. There are five teams in front of Dallas on the list who weren't in the playoff teams last year and none of them have a QB as good as Prescott.

Predictably, the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions top the list with the best odds to make the playoffs, while other obvious teams with a strong percentage include the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Washington Commanders.

That's two division rivals in front of the Cowboys, which would make them the third-best team in their own division. If it wasn't evident last season, the odds makers have made it clear now, the Commanders have passed the Cowboys as one of the top teams in the NFC after their championship game run and subsequent offseason.

After how the team played last year, it's understandable why there aren't many believers in the Cowboys, and this offseason hasn't done much to instill much faith in a rebound.

It's been mostly more of the same in free agency, shopping in the bargain bin to find help at positions of need while other teams sign quality players. The coaching search and subsequent hire of Brian Schottenheimer didn't move the needle, either.

While being disappointed in what the organization has done this Spring, it's important to note that the offseason isn't over and the team could still add players. That's something Stephen Jones noted in an interview this week; the Cowboys might not be done bringing in veteran help. And the draft hasn't taken place yet, another thing that could boost the teams' outlook for the 2025 season.

It's also presumptuous to assume Schottenheimer won't be a good coach when he's yet to have the opportunity to lead the team. New coaches outperform expectations all the time and there shouldn't be judgement before watching his team play.

If these odds are taking much of what's happened in the offseason into account, it's difficult to understand why the San Francisco 49ers have the fourth-best odds to make the dance. Few teams in the league have had a worse few months than the 49ers, who finished 2024 with a worse record than the Cowboys and a much worse offseason after a mass exodus in free agency.

None of what's happened this offseason has brought optimism for the Cowboys, but it's important to note how Dallas hasn't missed the playoffs in back-to-back seasons since the 2019-2020 campaigns, or when Prescott's been healthy enough to play in most of the games since 2017. Yet this is the outlook from what the last two offseasons has brought, and those vibes are being backed up by the odd makers.

So much for the argument that everyone always says 'it's the Cowboys' year' because no one is buying the team's chances of being a winner for the upcoming season.
