ESPN.com news services
The Arizona Diamondbacks are close to making a deal to trade pitcher Curt Schilling to Boston, pending approval from the pitcher himself, reports ESPN's Peter Gammons.

Despite earlier reports on a potential three-team trade between the Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee Brewers, Gammons reports that a deal to send Schilling to Boston will instead be handled between just Arizona and the Red Sox.

Boston would send left-handed pitcher Casey Fossum, lefty Jorge De La Rosa, righty Brandon Lyon and outfielder Michael Goss to Arizona for Schilling.

A potential three-way deal was initially discussed, a deal that would have sent Fossum and prospects to the Brewers, while first baseman Richie Sexson would have left Milwaukee for Arizona, with Schilling going to Boston.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and owner John Henry plan to fly out to Arizona on Tuesday night to meet with Schilling, who has to waive his no-trade clause to make the deal happen.

Schilling also has said he wants a three-year extension -- his Arizona contract, which will pay him $12 million in 2004, runs out after the coming season.

For Fossum & Lyon, etc. - doesn't look like a big deal for the Cards. Maybe they have potential, but really haven't done much yet.
D-Backs should hold out for at least one quality player, like Sexton, or whatever.
I'd just as soon see Schilling for one more year here!

One thing that puzzles me about the players the Dbacks would possibly get back from the BoSox:

We all know that getting Schilling puts them above the Yankees. It's a no-brainer for them.

My question is, why can't the DBacks get more in return? Couldn't the DBacks start a bidding war between the Sox and Yanks? The Boston media would lambast management for not closing the deal. If I'm Joe Jr., my price just went up.

I'm not sure I like what I see in return. Even though it could land Sexson.

Keep De La Rosa and send the others to Milwaukee. I would not be surprised if they kept De La Rosa and Fossum and sent the other guys in the Boston deal plus maybe Patterson and Spivey to the Brewers for Sexson.

Why are the Dbacks in a hurry to get rid of Spivey? I'm not sure I understand why?

Spivey, probably by his own admission, had a down year. He displays pop, hits for average, and has great range at 2nd (or wherever). Whatever caused him to slide, I'm sure he's worked on.

Kata comes in, gets off to a fast start, and everybody thinks Spivey is expendable. Why not keep him and Kata? Why give up the depth? Why give up on the youth?

Spivey will be 29 in January and will soon be at the "down-slope" of his career..... He's just too streaky and overpaid.... Hairston or Olson could serve as a cheaper alternative and still provide depth in the middle infield...

I heard the Brewers arn't interested in getting a 2nd basemen. They only want pitching and outfielders.
