D Urban just posted on his blog that the initial assessment by a guy he feels is reliable on the subject was that the Cards would wind up with a high-mid-round compensation pick.

But his source then re-thought the situation and now feels the best we'll get is a 7th round compensation pick.

If there are two things you can take to the bank each offseason, they're that: (a) big initial cap surpluses inevitably shrink to near-zero before we get to spend any and (b) despite all the early compensation pick buzz, we'll be lucky to get a lowly 7th rounder.

He stated that he thought we only had 1 B. Robinson on the team. When in fact we had two. That put us at 3-3 and that extra mil for Robinson is what down graded us from a 3/4 pick to a 7th rounder.

Per Urbans Blog:

-- According to someone who has a pretty good track record of predicting such things, the Cards are in line to get an extra third- or fourth-round draft pick after the NFL sorts through the free-agent flotsam and jetsam of 2008. See? Calvin Pace’s crazy contract may actually benefit the Cards after all. UPDATE PART II: Seems our friend making the predictions (see above link) readjusted his thinking. The extra third- or fourth-round pick now is a seventh-round choice. Not nearly as sexy.

Urbans "someone" is the same "someone" that we are talking about and posted in this thread, AdamJT13.

We go from a 3/4 to a 7 for Robinson signing?! :(

Yep. Its all about how many we signed vs. how many we lost. Contracts only come into play if there is a net loss or the net loss versus gained is equal.
