New Cardinals offensive coordinator Mike McCoy has talked with wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, the only player McCoy said he's had a chat with so far. McCoy said Fitzgerald is "excited." The two talked about terminology, with Fitzgerald telling McCoy that Ken Whisenhunt's and Bruce Arians' verbiages were similar. McCoy said he'll carry over some things from their tenures.

And that depends on McCoy's definition of 'a lot' and what does one expect McCoy to be doing anyways with a family and looking for a job he does not know he might have yet... spending late nights reviewing college tape for the unknown would not be his priority in the given situation

Good point. McCoy himself said that the team plans to do "what's best for the organization" for years to come.

What usually is the scouting reports come in and are reviewed then coaches select who they want to see on film, at the combine and on Pro Day.

Honestly, color me impressed. And that was a jab at Vance. He and Coach seem to have a similar vision. And this is a make or break it for McCoy, he aint going to leave anything on the table. That being said, boy is it a breath of fresh air to hear a coach consistently say he will adjust to his personnel. Its not about about what "you run", it's about your players....breath of fresh air.

Right now it's a bunch of talk. I am waiting to see how he sets up the offense and how the players respond before I say I like this hire.

great hire from Wilks perspective. Since McCoy has experienced poor results with his last couple jobs he makes an easy scapegoat if the offense struggles.

Wait it’s not all about his system. Good lord I hope this is true.

While believe a creative system can scheme people open upon first impression once there’s film on a system it becomes easier for good defenses to counter. No scheme is defense proof.

I’d rather have a great in-game coordinator whose play calling uses the right player at the right time to set up and take advantage of defenses and can make adjustments at halftime and on the fly.

Strategy is certainly important. Tactical moves are maybe more crucial.

as an example: while DeFillipo was the hot name -- why would he take the Cards OC job?

if he is a head coaching candidate for openings in 2019, nothing would pour cold water on that faster than heading an offense where your starting QB might be a combination of, lets say, Brock Osweiler and rookie Josh Allen.

under that scenario-- he could work miracles as an OC and still have a below average offense. I think a good portion of owners pick HCs with an eye towards names that will sizzle with the fans -- and numbers like that just wouldnt.


McCoy has been there, done that -- he knows he isnt likely going to be considered for a HC spot unless he puts two or three solid seasons of top notch offense together (and maybe not even then). He can take a longer term view ( and lets face it, was out of work so he couldnt be all that picky)

I would file my response under rumors and whispers, but from what I heard out of Philly where I live, is DeFillipo wasn't all that interested in leaving Philly.

I have no problem with a OC that has experience with a lot of different QBs and has won games with all of them, including Tim Tebow, and Kyle Orton.

The best answer McCoy gave that entire interview, was when asked what QB he would like, "One that wins games."

It is a small sample size, but that is an early indication that McCoy gets it.

Stats and all that are great, but wins are all that matter.

I think that is important; to be able to keep your OC here for several seasons and not lose him so darn fast like we lost both OC Todd Haley and later DC Todd Bowles after good seasons.

Yeah, again i don't get the reasoning. I'd LOVE the Cardinals to have a guy who's so good that he gets a head coaching job next year. The desire for a guy who's mediocre enough to not be coveted for a head coaching job really baffles me. Someone who takes years to get the offense in the top 5, if ever. Awesome! Let's hang on to that guy for years!

Sure, it would be great to have a superstar OC and keep him for years, but that's not the way life works. You have your cake, or you eat it.

I realize that McCoy hasn't yet had time to look at the tape and evaluate every player... and i don't expect or necessarily want him to be committed to a very specific scheme... but that press conference struck me as overly wishy-washy.

Presumably behind the scenes with Wilks and Keim he was more committal. At the 12:10 mark of the press conference, Wilks said that McCoy had a "great vision of how he wants the offense to run." It sure didn't come across that way from what McCoy said at the press conference. He basically said, "well whatever players we end up with, I'll figure something out." That's great but i'd kinda like the guy to know himself well enough to talk about the kinds of things he thinks he can best work with.

I don't expect him to have all the details at his first press conference, especially before the draft, but he's got to have SOME notion of what kind of offense he prefers to run, and it would have been nice for him to convey that a little better, without spilling the beans be being so specific that it could reveal the kinds of players the Cardinals might covet in the draft.

People seem to be wishfully putting a positive spin on what he said, but he really didn't say much of anything. "I like the kind of players who win" and "I'll be flexible and do whatever works" is just not enough information to make much of an evaluation.

I think this is why I feel McCoy is a good coordinator, and not a head coach, relatively speaking.
