Okay, how is it that F-Dog says that Shawn Marion has negative trade value, and nobody says nothing about it? When I say that I get killed. :)

I said it because I want to keep him, not get rid of him. Or maybe I used enough qualifiers or something. ;)

Count me among those who believe that Steve Francis would be more valuable to a rebuilding franchise than Shawn Marion.

I'm not sure I would want Francis on my rebuilding franchise--I don't think he's much of a winner, and I don't like what I've read about the atmosphere that Francis has created around the Rockets the past few years.

His talents are best appreciated when he's playing for a bad team, though.

It's the size and length of that contract that makes Shawn Marion's worth questionable. Shawn Marion will make $11.3 million next season. That's just too much for him, and it's going to keep increasing for five years after that. The real question is how much is he really worth?

Joe Mama

Different criteria make up a players worth. From a salary standpoint Marion might be a bit overpaid (especially with future raises) but regardless Marion is a young highly productive player. To a team that needs a SF or to a big market team or a rich team Marion would be a welcome addition. When one looks at the Marbury trade...look how much money NY was willing to take back for Marbury...its mindblowing. Was Marbury really worth his own salary AND Pennys money too? To a rich team like the Mavs or Trailblazers Marions overpayment would be insignificant. Also if a team thought Marion was overpaid they could easily add a player to make it balance out proper. The league is full of overpaid players...when a majority are overpaid it makes it more the norm than something so unusual.

I lived there for 13 years, Orlando is not a very good sports town. If they want people to show up they're going to need big names. Francis and Marion could draw people (Francis more) but the average fan there won't care about prospects.

Well there is tha side of things....then there is the side where Francis hates playing for a lousy team....hence his bailout on the Vancouver Grizz with his "Dont draft me" spiel. There also is a side to Francis where he verbalizes things a tad much...I doubt he'll be happy and quiet in Orlando whereas Marion probably would be.

Claims Mcgrady is demanding a trade to:

Suns
Spurs
Lakers
Rockets

The Suns have are most likely to get him, In my opinion.

Spurs don't really have anything too valuable to trade.
Lakers they won't trade Shaq or Kobe (FA) so who knows.
The Rockets have Stevie Franchise, but I'm not to sure ORL wants him.

So really it leaves...

JJ, Marion, 1st Rounder for TMac
Francis ... for TMac

If I was ORL I'd take PHX's offer. So maybe this means we're VERY likely to get TMac.

I'd agree, except that I don't think the Suns would agree to that deal. I think they might agree to two of the three "parts" (meaning, Marion and the pick or Marion and Johnson), but not all three. If Orlando insists on all three, they'll have to sweeten the deal with something else on their end.

I agree. Besides, have we ever found a clear answer as to how a trade that involves the first-round draft pick would work? I don't remember ever seeing a team draft a player for another team to be used in a future trade. Yet that is what would have to happen because Shawn Marion will have BYC status until July 1.

I would suppose they could do the "announce but completed later" routine, but it would mean picking based on a promise rather than a contract.

Not just one promise, but two--Orlando's promise of a trade, and McGrady's promise that he'll re-sign with the Suns.

Doesn't seem very likely to me, but maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

I found this interesting, well more amusing that Orlando would even ask, let alone "push" for this deal....

Of all the superstars purportedly on the trading block -- Chris Webber, Allen Iverson, Vince Carter, etc. -- the consensus remains that none of them is more likely to actually move than Orlando's Tracy McGrady.

McGrady

Houston is said to be making a hard push, peddling Steve Francis for starters.

In talks with Phoenix, the Magic have pushed for Orlando's own Amare Stoudemire and Joe Johnson, but the Suns would only be willing to part with Shawn Marion and Johnson ... if that.

The Clippers have also been mentioned as a possible T-Mac destination, should the Clips' dreams of signing Kobe Bryant away from the Lakers collapse, but it's tough to see T-Mac considering Clipperdom as a place to sign long-term as strongly as Kobe would.

Magic: Hello Suns...we want to talk to you about a trade for Tracy McGrady...

Suns: Okay, we are listening.

Magic: Well we were thinking that since McGrady is a superstar, you might be willing to trade us Amare Stoud-

Suns: *click*

exactly. They must have the best kind bud in the world if they are even somewhat serious in getting Amare and JJ for Tracy - what a joke.

I think the Magic are going to talk to everyone and end up doing nothing. Every team will see the same situation. "Why give up half my team for a guy I could sign as a free agent next year? I'd rather clear the cap space."

The situation now is no different than it will be a year from now. The only deals are ones that T-Mac approves and agrees to a sign and trade deal. No one will give up anything valuable for a guy who might leave a year later.

Why should T-Mac help the Magic strip mine the team he hopes to play with? He wants to play with a winner. Giving up all the team's good players to get him, makes the team no longer attractive to him.

Isn't the idea of a 'sign and trade' that the player signs a new contract or an extension before the trade so he won't be able to just leave the team that gets him after a year? Or are we calling this one a sign and trade while it is merely a simple trade?

We should have a better idea what Orlando is going to do after the lottery tomorrow - if they get the #1 pick they'll be in a stronger position to retain TMac. Then I'd expect them to take a much more demanding position toward anyone wanting to talk about a sign and trade. Failing that I'd expect them to think very seriously about salvaging what they can from the situation this summer.

I'm not so sure about that George. Teams like the Phoenix Suns and/or the Indiana Pacers might not be willing to give up with the Orlando Magic are asking for McGrady because they believe in the young players they already have. I think the Houston Rockets would probably give anything and everything short of Yao Ming to get McGrady. I'm not a huge fan Steve Francis, but I think he would be very good compensation for the Magic. I'm just not sure they have other pieces to get it done.

I suspect that Francis and Cato might be the best the Magic could hope for. Francis would score 25 a game if he wasn't asked to pass to people all the time.

If his list of four teams is really accurate, then I'd say I'm impressed with his choices. It's clear that he knows what it takes to win a championship nowadays: a big man. All the teams he is considering are good weather spots with a dominant(or potentially dominant) big man. Shaq, Duncan, Yao, Amare.

Before getting too carried away, the original rumor came from Vescey and was taken from the Spurs web site.
