Sorry for the cruddy formatting. The measurements are: height in socks, height in shoes, weight, wingspan, standing reach. I've put in blue the players that "we" have already drafted. (Podkolzine wasn't there, apparently because the NBA decided to "count" his measurements from last year. Anyone still have those?)

So much for those "develop Dwight Howard at center" ideas.

I suppose it's still possible. He's a fraction of an inch longer than Okafor and could probably add the extra weight.

I don't see the problem, his standing reach is as long as Ramos, and second longest among those measured. The only one longer is some no name at 9'5".

Truly, it doesn't matter where the top of your head is, it matters where the tips of your fingers are. I would be willing to bet, based upon these measurments that both Howard and Okafor will be more intimidating in the middle than Ramos, based upon height and leaping ability alone--leave out skill.

To me, these measurements confirm Okafor and Howard as 1 and 2 picks, and of their serviceability at center.

Ramos must have a long neck and head. In shoes he is 5" taller than Howard, and he has 1" longer wingspan. Yet they have the same standing reach. How is that possible? I mean Okafor has a gigantic head. The guy looks like a totem pole. His standing reach is just 1" less than Ramos despite the fact that Ramos has 5.25" on him and 1.5" on his wingspan.

I know Amare Stoudemire measured 6'8.5" without shoes and 6'10" with them. Does anyone remember his wingspan and/or standing reach?

I really thought Iguodala's wingspan was longer than 6'11", especially considering that he is almost 6'7" in shoes. His arms look like they are dragging on the ground. I would have guessed that they were over 7'0".

Ramos has an awful lot of neck on him, IIRC. I guess there must be enough space between his shoulders and his chin to more than make up for Okafor's head.

As I said earlier, Okafor, Humphries and Al Jefferson were the pleasant surprises. It wouldn't surprise me now if Okafor played center for most of his NBA career.

I found the measurements for Amare Stoudemire and the rest of the 2002 draft class. His wingspan is 7'3/4", and his standing reach is 9'1/2".

What were Mourning's meansurements? He was relatively short (listed at 6'10"), but played center his entire career and a very high level until his kidney gave out. (Career 20 ppg and 9.7 rpg).

Bump, because I've now put Luke Jackson in blue as well. I'll keep doing that with each new pick in the mock draft.

Podkolzine measured 7'4" at Chicago last year and 7'5 this year at the Euro camp.

He's just 19 so it is feasible he grew another inch.

I think it was on one of the ESPN Insider where Chad Ford reported that Biedrins is 6'11" in shoes with a 7'1" wingspan. Does anybody else remember reading that?

Yes, but it was not clear if he measured Biedrins at the time.

In any case, the case for Biedrins is that he is extremely athletic and at around 7 foot, it makes him a rarity. I see him developing into a Camby type big man who can rebound, block shots, run the floor, and score mostly on put backs.

The case against him is that he is really, really young and not a big offensive threat. My read on him is that he may not be physically ready to play, but he has the defense and rebounding skills that he will contribute once he is physiclly ready (ie stronger). I just don't know how that will take.

With Pavel the task is much more complicated. He is strong, but he does not have NBA condititioning when it comes to running the court. He can shoot and pass, but is no further along than Biedrins when it comes to the low post. But most of all, he has very poorly developed defensive skills and was not much of a rebounder in league play.

For Biedrins, waiting is mostly about conditioning. For Pavel, it is about not only conditioning but also learning how to play defense. IMHO, that is a much bigger hump.

Here is Ford's take on Biedrins:
Upside: He's unlike any Euro I've ever seen. He's long (7-foot with a 7-1½ wingspan), has great lateral quickness, is an explosive leaper with a 34½ inch vertical jump (Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony each have a 33-inch verticals, by way of comparison) and ... drum roll please ... Biedrins prefers to play in the paint, where most 7-footers belong. He's a pure four whose specialty is defense, shot blocking and energy -- not real staples of the Euros who have been flooding the draft the past few years. His body is ripped, and he has a strong core that allows him to play in the post. He bench presses 185 pounds around 15 times. Only one big guy in Chicago (Jason Keep) topped that in combine testing last year.

Downside: What will ultimately scare a few teams away is his pedestrian outside shooting ability and questions about the competition level he played against in Latvia. Biedrins' outside shot isn't bad (in fact, in the second workout with the Clippers and Nuggets, it was actually very, very good), but it's clear from his shooting form that he struggles to hit anything consistently outside of 12 feet -- think Andrei Kirilenko when he first came into the league.

He is listed 6'10 on espn draft profiles, 6'11 on nbadraft.net and 7'0 at draftcity.com(also has him claiming he has been projected to reach 7'2 there). I think that the espn profiles may use the european measurements which are without shoes I believe so that may account for the difference in hieght.

I picked up a few of the combine test results, from Chad Ford (second-hand through another board):

Code:
Player reps vert lane agility

Childress 11 36” 11.95 sec
Deng 5 31.5” 11.46
Gordon 12 37.5” 11.28
Harris 5 37” 11.03
Howard 7 35.5” 11.21
Humphries [B]22[/B] 36” 11.33
Iguodala 4 34.5” 11.17
Jackson 13 36” 11.1
Jefferson 3 30” [I]13.08[/I]
Livingston [I]0[/I] 30” [B]10.72[/B]
Nelson 15 33.5” 10.95
Okafor [B]22[/B] 34” 12.32
Ramos 5 [I]26.5”[/I] 12.61
JR Smith 5 35.5" 10.93
Josh Smith 12 [B]39.5”[/B] 11.43
Snyder 19 35” 10.79

Humphries, Luke Jackson and Snyder appear to be the workout warriors in this group. Livingston's agility score is the real eye-opener for me, though.

Iguodala's numbers are disappointing. He must have had a bad day or something, because he's a tremendous athlete on the court.

After looking at all those numbers, Okafor is looking even better.

Huge standing reach,
Great wingspan,
Excellent vert for a big guy

Add that to his head for the game and his impeccable defensive timing.

Okafor's vertical is decent for a big guy but not special or anything.

Just look at Howard and Humphries. Both better in the same draft and as tall or taller.

Amare measured like 37.5" vertical and I though he had harmstring problems and shoulder problems before the draft that also limited his workouts.

Nene also had a 36" vertical or so and there are some big man in the NBA with a much better vert than Okafor. (Garnett, Swift, Martin...).

I would suspect that Iguodala wasn't 100% healthy or that he already has a promise and his eyes set on a team.

Those measures don't compare to what was previously reported. Maybe Iggy spent all his time shooting three pointers rathe than weight lifting. :D

One thing to remember with Iggy, he was a champion high jumper in HS. I'm not worried about his athleticism.

On the other other hand, I feel vindicated when I said I though Jackson was more athletic than most people realized. He's not worth a #7 but he would be a solid pickup if the Suns traded down.

Give me a break. First of all, I thought Amare Stoudemire's vertical leap was 36". Nene's was 33 or 34". Secondly Okafor is bigger and stronger than those other players you mentioned.

I all but guarantee Alonzo Mourning did not have a 34.5" vertical leap.

I liked Josh Smith's measurements and combine results - Synder and Jackson tested well but might be a bit of reach (although better fundamentals)... Gordon seems like the prize at #7 everything included. Iguodala disappointed - length, vert, strength, etc at #7 but has the game I admire.

That's really how I feel as well. Snyder doesn't really do much for me. I wouldn't mind Jackson, but I don't want him at #7. In Josh Smith is one of those guys that would be happy with because I figure if they took him they feel he is going to be a great player. Iguodala and Gordon are the guys I like the most at this point. Of course my opinion could easily change by tomorrow. I'm even more wishy-washy this year than in years past. :)

After #2 everything is possible.

the entire NBA is chaotic right now. There is a very good chance that three of the top five players in the NBA will be moved this summer. Well, at least two of them might be. On top of that you have the expansion draft and this weird amateur draft.
