Merriman Has Two Torn Ligaments

SAN DIEGO ---- Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman said Saturday he has two torn ligaments in his ailing left knee and has been told by doctors that he could suffer a possible career-ending injury if he attempts to play without undergoing surgery.

Merriman needs to be smart about this. Two major ligaments in the knee are torn. With today's technology, they can be fixed and he can probably be ready to go next year. If they completely tear, he will never sniff the field again

Sadly, I get the feeling this is the beginning of the end for Merriman. My gut says he won't play this year, he'll come back next year and never be the same player. We'll see, but I'm pulling for him. Good luck Shawn, hope you can prove everyone wrong.

I don't know if that will be the case. like you said I hope not. the guy is so good and you can tell he has a lot of will power that most people don't have. with the way today's athletes rehab injuries.....and the fact that he is still very young....i think he'll be back close to 100% if he takes the surgery. look at other athletes like amare stoudamire in the NBA who had micro-surgery. also joey galloway of the bucs had two ACL tears and recovered fine. the guy is like 40 and is still faster than most NFL players. I know merriman plays a more physical position, but I think he'll be fine. as far as the chargers defense? this is a major blow to their SB aspirations IMO. they might have trouble dealing with a surging broncos team in their division.

(I mean beyond just simply not using steroids.)

Don't forget the PFT report from a few months ago that merriman had tested positive again and might be suspended for the first few games of the season.

If he sits out injured that won't be verified true or false until next season.
