Now the Mets will look worse to most because they were in first place but how long have the Padres been in a playoff position? Since the all star break? I see it as being the same.

Are you kidding?? The Mets had a 7 game lead with 17 games left in the season!! 12 of those 17 games were HOME!!! They went 5 & 12!!!!

Not even close... The Mets choke ranks among the alltime greatest chokes in all of pro sports!

OK let me restate I understad the place in history for the Mets. All I am saying is the Padres fans should feel almost exactly the same way. They were in a playoff position until the last day of the season and let it go.

Gotcha Scott.. However, the Padres were in a tight fight the whole way... They never really had a big lead at any point in the season. Between the D-Backs, Rockies, Cards, and even the Dodgers for a short while, the Pads were always in a dogfight...
The Mets on the other hand... well, I just don't know how Met fans are sleeping right now...

If Im a fan of the Padres, I have to feel absolutely sick to my stomach knowing that they held their own playoff destiny and failed to win one game with two remaining. Its even more discouraging that their staff ace, regarded by many as a Cy Young Award run away, and legit MVP hopeful died in the biggest game of the season for his team.

Obviously, the Padre collapse pales in comparison to the Met meltdown, however I generated what you were saying in your initial post and took it as such.

Good point Jay...

And for the record, Hoffman choked tonight as well. BUT, Holliday did not score that game winner... Man, when will MLB get replay??? :bang:

You should go back to that thread... I do not think that would have made much of a difference... plus, if the MLB went back to replay then that great game would not have occurred (*note: a Colorado player hit a ball that was said to be a ground rule double but replays showed that it was a home run).

Just behind losing a seven game series after being up 3-0, maybe?

Is a slow bleed out from a gut shot worse than 4 whacks to the head with...lets say a shovel?

Ha, ha... Well, the Yanks lost those 4 straight IN the playoffs, and on the back of 25 championships...

One collapse that often gets overlooked in Sports...

NFL Playoffs, 1993. Houston vs. Buffalo. The Oilers held a 35-3 with 13:15 left in the 3rd quarter... then lost the game in OT to the Bills, 38-41. The Bills scored 5 TDs in less than 2 quarters against a playoff opponent. Though it might not be the biggest collapse in Sports, we should not forget the failure that was the Houston Oilers.

I haven't forgotten. The game was a blowout. Warren Moon had 4 TD passes in the 1st half.

Yeah, but the Padres' collapse was sweeter :)

'Specially since the boasted they would win the division, threw Peavy out to beat us with 3 days rest and claimed Byrnes was all 'false hustle.' They deserved it.

I think for us Dbacks fans, the Padres collapse is so much sweeter.

Even though we'd probably rather face the Padres over the Rockies this post-season, if they advance . . . it's more gratifying to see the Padres goin' fishing while we advance.

Pretty sure, Yankees won many of those champs before there were any playoffs. :)

The Mets collapse was way worse. Here's why:

Mets payroll: $115 million
Phillies payroll: $89 million
Padres payroll: $58 million
Rockies payroll: $54 million

Then there are the D-Backs rolling in at $52 million for the ultimate bargain
