Reuter's five predictions: Michael Johnson will be picked at the end of the first round...There's no way Michael Johnson has proven himself a first-round pick according to his play on the field. But as an athlete, he's a top 10 talent. And NFL coaches like Tom Coughlin (Giants, No. 29), Jeff Fisher (Tennessee, No. 30) and Ken Whisenhunt (Arizona, No. 31) believe they can get the most out of players like Johnson. The Giants already picked a less athletic version of Johnson in Mathias Kiwanuka a couple of years ago, and would find a place to play Johnson whether at end or linebacker, especially if the receiver they want isn't available. Tennessee could also use some pass rush help on the edge, while Arizona's 3-4 hybrid defense could take advantage of Johnson's length and closing speed. The Cardinals could play him at end in some situations and drop him into coverage to affect passing lanes on others. - Chad Reuter, The SportsXchange, NFLDraftScout.com

ok.. I may get reemed for saying this, but I have to...

I have never, and I mean NEVER seen a player get called a bust by the collective experts more than Michael Johnson... I mean never, and I am as big of a draft nerd as they come...

Here is my point, there is a good chance Johnson does nothing in his NFL career, but honestly what are the chances that he says screw ALL of you I am going to prove that I should have been a top 5 pick...

I mean, look at it, there isn't a single "expert" that I have read/herd that has said "You know what, with the right coach/Scheme, this guy can be a HUGE steal", except this article, and I almost agree with it..

Now in all likelyhood will he be a worse version of Alan Branch when it comes to Work Ethic and effort, probably. But it is not as much of a forgone conclusion as most people believe it is... The bottom line, If Whisenhunt believes he can coach him, I will not be devestated with that pick..

Just sayin...

Yeah, great post, ASUDude. The thing is Whiz will know all there is to know about Johnson as he is a GT grad and will have the inside scoop. If Whiz does take he we wil know that he has been assured the Johnson will be primed and ready. Also...let's not forget that $$$$ has a way of motivating a player of his ability.

Not sure how that applies. He will get his contract before he even plays a single down.

Mitch how many coaches tell a team "This kid can't play"? I hope Wiz refers to the tape on Johnson and doesn't add another Alan Branch (great physical tools). Potential is a sure fire way to miss on a player.

Late in the first round won't be big bucks. I meant in earning the major deal after 4 years.

Bucky: the GT coach is not going to bs a highly revered alum. Whiz wil get the straight scoop. You can be assured of that.

Name that player:

Player 1: 38 Tackles, 30 Solo, 11.5 sacks

Player 2: 49 Tackles, 30 Solo, 12 Sacks

PLayer 3: 49 Tackles, 28 Solo, 9 Sacks

Player 4: 36 Tackles, 30 Solo, 13 Sacks

Possible players: Everette Brown, Brian Orakpo, Aaron Maybin, and Michael Johnson...

point being, for being known as a player who didn't try, and took plays off, and has a "low motor" he seemed to have very similar stats to the other highly regarded DEs in this years draft...

not saying he is can't miss, just sayin....

Michael Johnson is the 1st guy. Jason Smith calls Michael Johnson the best pass rusher he's faced. He'll get a sack or so and take the rest of the game off. If he works his ass of throughout the game than he'd be a megasteal, but if he is just another lazy sack of crap than he'll be a bust.

really depends on the Cardinals risk profile -- Johnson is a boom or bust kinda guy.

as for the "makes one play and takes the rest of the game off" stuff ---- his production suggests otherwise. In every game, and especially in games against top competition, he produced at least three impact plays a game in the form of a sack, a tackle for loss, or a forced fumble. You simply dont have that kind of impact by slacking the majority of the snaps.

If you want to say he was only interested in rushing the passer and not playing the run, or gave up on plays when they want away from him -- that I can agree with. If you want to call him a speed/finesse player -- no argument.
But frankly -- if at #31 the Cards got a really good pass rusher who rotated in on passing downs -- the contract at that point would be fair for a player like that. Simeon Rice had a long, productive career as exactly that type of player, but a much higher price ( and gladly paid by the SB champ Bucs).

BTW-- I think it was Eugene Monroe, LT of Virginia that said Johnson was the best pass rusher.

I don't hate him, but when you're a pass rusher that goes limp as soon you're engaged I'm going to have some concerns. That motor is a big problem.

based on all the ads I see watching TV these days, there is quite a selection of prescriptions that can help that

they certainly help a guy throw a football through a tire swing

btw-- I think this is all a moot point.

Whis and Keim have all said that of their top three things-- "plays physical" is one of them -- and while I like Johnson's athleticism and pass rush ability, I also know he isnt a physical player.

That alone probably takes him off their board.
