To close out the first day of Madness, No. 5 Michigan basketball takes on No. 12 University of California, San Diego in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Michigan and UC San Diego face off at 10 p.m. in the second-to-last game of the first day of Round of 64 action in the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines and Tritons are playing at the Ball Arena in Denver following the 4-13 matchup between Texas A&M and Yale. The winner of those two games will play in the Round of 32 on Saturday in Denver.
Michigan recovered from ending the regular season with three straight losses by winning three straight in Indianapolis to take the Big Ten tournament crown and clinch the conference's automatic bye — even though they were already safely in the field. Michigan is back in the Big Dance under first-year coach Dusty May for the first time since making the Sweet 16 in 2022.

UC San Diego enters its first-ever tournament on a 15-game winning streak dating back to mid-January, with 13 of those victories coming by double digits. The Tritons are balanced, with four different players who average double figures and rank second in the country with a 23.2% forced turnover rate on defense.

Game notes and highlights to come.
TV channel: TBS.
Stream: NCAA March Madness Live app; Sling TV.
Start time: 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
Tony Garcia, Michigan beat writer for Detroit Free Press: Michigan is an astounding 11-1 in its past 12 games decided by two possessions or fewer, a testament to its ability to remain poised in key moments and execute in the clutch. UCSD has the longest winning streak of any team in the nation and is a tough matchup stylistically but doesn't have quite enough size to hang with U-M. The Tritons put a scare in the Wolverines, but as they've done all year, they simply find a way to survive and advance. Look for a big game from Wolf. The pick: Michigan 75, UC San Diego 69.
Spread: Michigan favored by 2½ points.
Moneyline: Michigan -145. UC San Diego +118.
Over/under: 142½ points.
Odds as of Thursday afternoon provided by BetMGM.
