EAST LANSING – Lansing State Journal sports reporter Nathaniel Bott breaks down No. 2 Michigan State hockey's 1-0 win against Notre Dame in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals.

What happened

MSU began its quest to repeat as Big Ten Tournament champions on Saturday, hosting an upset-minded Notre Dame team who knocked out No. 2-seed Minnesota last weekend in a three-game series.

Despite spending ample time in the Notre Dame zone, the Spartans couldn't break through, with the Irish blocking shots left and right and junior goaltender Owen Say making 36 saves through 40 minutes.

But, it didn't take long in the final frame for MSU to solve the riddle. With some leftover power-play time from the end of the middle stanza, MSU started the third with a man advantage, and junior forward and Hobey Baker contender Isaac Howard fired a one-timer past Say just 19 seconds into the period to give the Spartans the lead.

Howard's power-play tally would wind up being the only goal of the game as the Spartans advance to the Big Ten Tournament final with a 1-0 victory over Notre Dame.

MSU goaltender Trey Augustine recorded an 18-save shutout, while Say made 45 saves for the Irish.

What's next

MSU will host the Big Ten Tournament final next Saturday against the winner of No. 3-seed Ohio State and No. 5-seed Penn State, who play in the other semifinal game later tonight.
