Hes the new media darling coach and is getting a ton of attention because of the steelers history of coaching and what not..

He hasn't changed anything in Pittsburgh..

The Rooneys kept members of Cowhers staff so they could run the team..

Theres a reason Tomlins headset isn't ever on. I doubt this clown even calls any plays.

Watching his interviews he comes of as a very intelligent well orginized person. The players seem to respect him.

I don't think I necessarily agree with all of this but he really did inherit everything he needed to go far in the playoffs.

Media darling.

Like bob sanders..

You could put Dave Mac behind that staff and they would still be successful.

Tomlin has been smart enough to not screw-up a good thing. Not every coach will do that... ;)

i dont agree with the title of the thread--

I do think there are legitimate questions on just how much he has to do with the teams success given what he inherited --

but Wade Wilson [edit: Phillips] also inherited an awful lot -- and it apparent that he hasnt done such a good job. (although in fairness --- Wilson is undercut by Jones regularly, while Tomlin never has to worry about that in Pittsburgh)

I think you mean Wade Phillips.

I agree he is probably a little bit over-rated just because he did inherit a very good team that has had a good winning attitude for a long time now.

But then again... Whiz is probably slightly over-rated too just because of the Cardinals success in a short amount of time. Time will tell when we see the careers of these coaches play out.

*Wade Philips,

But i agree with what you say.. He was given a team 1 year fresh off a SB title.
With the exception of Faneca, Porter, and Haggans.. The team has kept almost every player.

Dick Lebeau remains as the DC.. Despite Tomlin never having run a 3-4 defense. (Didnt do a damn thing)

Cowhers WR coach Bruce Arians was retained.. (Rooneys actually declined Whisenhunt from contacting Arians for a potential job offer with the Cards.) Why'd they retain him? So they can keep the same playbook that was previously ran with Cowher. Again, Didnt do a damn thing on offense either.

Someone said that he was handed something great, and was good enough to mess it up.. Lets reword that a bit, he CANT mess anything up, because he doesn't run a damn thing. If players respect him as a motivator, great. But a great coach? Give me a break.

How is it an interesting point with the headset? Is he the first coach to lift the mic up after a play is over to talk to the players or something? Funny how a couple of pics can sum up his coaching for the year lol.

And the main reason he's getting so much media attention right now is because the Steelers are going to the SB. Whiz is getting just as much media attention right now as well.

Like someone already pointed out about him not changing anything, what was he supposed to do, come in and fix something that wasn't broken? The Rooney's hired him to do a job and keep the Steelers winning games and making it to the playoffs, he's done nothing but his job so far. I don't think it's fair for any fan of any team to call any HC overrated, it's not like any of us have ever had that kind of a job before and know anything about what goes into creating a successful team or keeping a team a success. I don't know personally, but I doubt it's as easy as some make it out to be.

disagree with this as well

Its clear that Whis inherited some nice players on the team. Its also true that he has benefitted from being a coach in the "post UOP" era.

However-- the degree of difficulty he has faced in general, and this year in the specific has been very high.

Obviously we will never know if Mike Tomlin could have come in and done the same thing here ---

As a fellow William & Mary alumnus, I strongly disagree with this thread.

Yes, he benefits from a strong team/organization. But there are others coaches who have run tight ships into the ground.

Go Cards!!!

Keeping LeBeau and his 3-4 zone defense was a smart move (rather than trying to change over to his own Tampa 2 defense). A lot of coaches want to do everything there own way even if it hurts the team. He DID bring in a few new coaches where he felt it was necessary.

Jeff Fisher to me is the NFL's most overrated coach. He has more years with 8 or less wins than winning years and a losing playoff record.

Agreed. I think Tomlin is a very good coach, and manager. I don't think he does too much X's and O's but I don't think he needs to either.

A leader and a manager of men can allow you to get a lot out of a team.

Disagree 100% Shzm.

I have a lot of respect for the guy and his players love him. I heard Van Pelt fawning over him today on the radio and he deserves alot of love. Not more then Wiz though. I have said it 3 times and I'll say it again. Taking the Steelers to the Super Bowl in 2 years is one thing......you can all finish the rest of that sentence.

I just don't think he is as strong on his side of the ball as Wiz is at his. And he doesn't have to be with Lebeau in place. As far as good young coaches go I consider him

#2

Anyone want to guess who I have ranked ahead of him?

Hint: Not Mike Smith;)

Disagree.

This is not the same scenario like when JJ left the Cowboys and Twizzler head took over that team. Maybe things were more like that last year but not this year. Last year he was trying not to rock the boat.

I have watching interviews with the team and he came into this season thinking things had to be done more his way without destroying the ground work BC had already laid out. He alread had a good reputation as an assistant and is experienced.
