SHAMOKIN — Minersville and North Schuylkill ramped up their track seasons at Shamokin’s Purple Showdown Wednesday afternoon.

Minersville’s leaders on the day included the 4×100-meter relay team of Maggie Hoffman-Long, Jewelisa Perez, Allie Pennypacker and Cambrie Herb’s first place finish, North Schuylkill’s Molly Frantz’s first place finish in the girls 100-meter dash, Spartan Angel Ortiz taking first place in the boys 200-meter dash as well as Minersville’s Johnny Burgess winning first in the boys 800-meter run.

“Seeing other kids do it gives them confidence and something to shoot for,” said Minersville track head coach Jason Burgess. “It’s program building because you see the upperclassmen doing well and the freshmen coming in want to be like the success of the leaders.”

Minersville’s Paiten LaPoint placed second on the 4×400 meter relay team and got third place in the boys 200-meter dash. LaPoint is returning from a fifth place finish in the boys 100-meter run at states and a third place finish in the boys 200-meter run at states last year.

“I want to go back to states for the 100 and 200-meter runs and hopefully win,” said LaPoint. “Get some looks from bigger colleges.”

North Schuylkill’s Molly Frantz won first place in the girls 200-meter dash.

“Coach wants us to train hard every practice and get better each time out,” said Frantz.

Minersville’s Kolin Long is competing on a 4×800 meter relay team which placed second in 9:15 behind Shamokin Area. Long was a 4×800 state medalist on the track last year.

“Our team message has always been the same, to go in there and do the best you can, believe in yourself and we’ve always had a good team and a good name for ourselves,” said Long. “It’s a rebuilding time since we had three seniors graduate last year.”

North Schuylkill’s Luke Miller is competing in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and the 4×100 meter relay.

“I love running and I come to the track every day with the same attitude and I enjoy it every day,” said Miller. “I love track.”

North Schuylkill’s Cameron Kacilowicz and Minersville’s Shane Fessler shared their thoughts on starting the track season.

“We have a strong team and a couple guys have been working all winter,” said Kacilowicz. “We’ll be a top contender in the league and I think we can make a run at districts.”

“Since we got moved up a division we’ve got to work extra harder and push extra hard at practice,” Fessler continued. “It’s important to get our bodies conditioned so we can compete with the top dogs.”

The early season track meets are meant for the athletes to set their base times so they can build on them throughout the season.

Burgess likes to look at it as a way to get the kids comfortable with everyone and everything about track and field.

“Finding talent, working on handoffs, working on nerves and I like being at meets with a bunch of competitive teams early in the season,” said Burgess. “It’s good to get the butterflies out of the kids and working on competing in a large group of people.”
