No one would be surprised if Missouri State women's basketball was chomping at the bit to play Illinois Chicago in the quarterfinal round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament after the Flames beat the Lady Bears earlier this season.

The Lady Bears started the game looking extra motivated, but the Flames eventually fought back. Missouri State held them off in the end.

Missouri State is on to the MVC Tournament semifinals after a 77-70 win over UIC on Friday night at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana. The Lady Bears will play either Belmont or Northern Iowa on Saturday at 4 p.m.

Lacy Stokes set the tone early for Missouri State women's basketball

No one plays with a chip on their shoulder quite like Lady Bears star point guard Lacy Stokes, and you could tell she was extra motivated early against the Flames.

The Lady Bears lost to the Flames 69-62 in their lone regular-season matchup on Dec. 29.

Stokes came out on fire, scoring 14 of her 16 first-half points in the opening quarter while making six of her first nine shots. As she got some rest in the second quarter, the Lady Bears continued to pull away thanks to Sarah Linthacum making all four of her shots and holding the Flames to 4-18 from the field.

Stokes finished the game with 29 points.

The Lady Bears led by as many as 21 after Kyrah Daniels made a 3 during the first possession of the second half. That lead dwindled down to eight midway through the fourth quarter and five with 38.7 seconds left after a Keimari Rimmer three-point play.

Stokes split a pair of free throws before UIC made a 3 with 27.8 seconds left, bringing the game within a score. Paige Rocca answered with a pair of free throws, building the lead back up to five.

After UIC had come up with an empty possession, Stokes made a pair of free throws, putting the final touches on a quarterfinal win.

Missouri State women's basketball awaits its semifinal opponent

The Lady Bears will wait to see if they will take on third-seeded Belmont or sixth-seeded Northern Iowa in Saturday's 4 p.m. semifinal. The two started shortly after the conclusion of the Lady Bears' quarterfinal victory.

Belmont recently beat the Lady Bears 67-61 in Nashville on March 1, and the Lady Bears beat them in Springfield 57-55 on Jan. 2.

MSU swept Northern Iowa during the regular season. The Lady Bears won 81-45 in Springfield on Jan. 26 before a 75-72 overtime win on Feb. 20.
