What is the deal ? The 411 ? The action ? The numbers ?

Let's do this. It helps to get back on the horse with a little offseason talk.

if it's the off season, i have to put a fire Rod Graves statement out there :D. Actually, this will probably be the 1st off season where i don't bash him. That is unless he lets Dansby go .

Does anybody know if we get complementary draft pick(s) this year? With 2 former 1st rounders departing last year, and 1 of those signing a huge megacontract elsewhere and ended up the starter there?

EDIT: i mean compensatory draft picks of course

Won't know until they're rewarded. I'd think we'd get something for Pace. It also depends on your signings too however. We compensated his loss with LaBoy.

First 3 picks:

1) LeSean McCoy RB
2) Cody Brown OLB
3) Sherrod Martin CB
If McCoy is gone at 31 then we could go Larry English with 1st and Shonn Greene 2nd

Possible Boldin trade for a 1st and a 3rd

1a) K. Moreno / L McCoy RB
1b) Rashad Johnson FS
2) Cody Bown OLB
3a) Antoine Caldwell OC
3b) Sherrod Martin CB

I don't even begin to know how to contemplate a draft where we have the 31st pick.

I guess you look for guys who we used to think of for our 2nd round selection?

The last 5 guys taken at 31:

Kenny Phillips DB
Greg Olsen TE
Kelly Jennings DB
Mike Patterson DT
Rashaun Woods WR

Woods, considered by one writer to be among the biggest busts in 49ers history, is the only one not to be a decent contributor (based on stats from nfl.com) to his team in 2008.

So it looks like we should get a decent player-and for a lot less money than we normally have to pay our first round pick. It also looks like the guys you get there can be a "future" player". Like Campbell and Iwebema. Guys you groom for a couple of years before becoming a starter.

I can't believe it. We have a real NFL team. A REAL NFL TEAM!!!!

Yeah, its weird, but nice, drafting this low. I keep wanting to put Orakpo as our 1st rounder. I think we can get a starter at C, G, TE, or S here, all of which are needs to some degree.

Sadly Orakpo won't go that low.

BTW: What a run for our teams. 2005 UT wins the BCS. 2006 St.Louis Cards win the World Series. 2007 Spurs win the NBA title. 2008 Arizona Cards win the NFC Championship and play in the Super Bowl.

No comp picks. We signed more qualifing free agents then we lost, thus we are not in the calculations for comp picks.

I covered it during 2008 offseason with a tally of who counted for or against us as we were signing them but I cant seem to find it again. Anyone happen to remember hat thread or where its at?

It's weird but i think drafting 31, you're more likley to get a guy who contributes for a number of years because you're less likely to take a high risk/reward type player. It seems like you get the solid guy that is just a good football player. For example i think a guy like Stafford, Orakpo, or Crabtree is more likely to be a superstar or a bust than a guy like Alex Mack. But Mack has zero chance going that high. Drafting that high, you go for the guy's with the high ceiling and potential greatness.
