Mondesi would consider coming back next season

Raul Mondesi's first 10 days with the Diamondbacks have been so favorable that he said he would strongly consider staying here if asked.

"Perfect," Mondesi said before Saturday night's game. "That's why I like it all right. Let me play the games, and we'll see. We're here to win. And we got a chance to win."

Specifically, Mondesi said he likes how he has been handled by manager Bob Brenly and his teammates since his acrimonious departure from the New York Yankees.

"I used to come here with the Dodgers in the Instructional League and when I played with Los Angeles and had a good time," Mondesi said.

A plus for the Diamondbacks is that they play in the National League, where Mondesi enjoyed his best seasons with the Dodgers (1994-99).

"I don't want to change anything," Mondesi said. "I hope to stay here. We'll see what happens."

The Diamondbacks have declined to negotiate with any of their free agents until after the season. A big question will be what Mondesi is worth. He's completing a six-year, $60 million contract. Right fielder Danny Bautista already is under contract for $4 million next season.

Bautista is pretty worthless as trade bait with his injuries and poor performance when he is actually on the field.

My prediction:
Mondesi will get what he will consider to be a low ball offer (maybe 6-8 million per year) and will test the free agent waters, but won't find anything better and come back.

If Joe Jr. offers Mondesi $6M-$8M per than he's a lot stupider than I could have ever imagined. It would be doubly bad to make it a multi-year contract.

Agreed - Mondy is not worth that much money. $4-5 million tops, and that may be too much. Baseball economics have changed greatly since Mondy last signed a contract.

I took Mondy's comments, at this time, to mean one thing -- "I'm happy to be here!"

That's cool! :D

I think there is gonna be alot of changes next year. The end of Grace, etc. There will be enough money there. Drop Bautista. I think we should have never kept him and let Sanders go IMO. Mondesi is a good player that wants to win. Agood addition to this team. Look what he has done for this team already. He has won 2 games I know for sure with a key at bat at the end of a game. I say keep him.
