So, yeah, it sounds like Miguel Montero will be sticking around. If you missed it, @jonmorosi got it first: $60 million over five years.

Glad he signed but Towers sucks. Five years for $60 million is outrageous.

Is it? Look what Molina and McCann are making. Seems to be about the going rate for a top flight catcher these days, which Miggy is. If he can hit in the 270-280s, hit 15-20HRs and be one of the best Catchers at gunning down runners each year, it'll be hard to complain about the deal.

Additionally, it sends a message to the guys on the team that if they perform, they can get paid in Arizona. That was something that was known under Colangelo, but not necessarily the case since he left.

I would have felt better about 8-9, since it seems last year was a career year for everyone. But it looks to be a done deal. If it is last years' Miggy for 5 years - decent deal for the DBacks.

Five years at $12 million is way too much. Montero had a very good year but he is not worth that much and for that long. This signing mostly means Drew will not be re-signed.

Drew was not going to re-sign even if we didn't get a deal done with Montero. Boras is going to price him out of ARZ. The question is will we be able to get anything (trade or draft picks) for him.

before the season I had just written off Montero, because the guy was going to get PAID, and I didn't believe the Dbacks would do it... People will just look st 12 million and baulk at the deal, but really, it is less than what he would have made on the open market bar none...

The guy is a decent to above average hitter with plus power, AND is one of the best and at worst a top 3 defensive catcher in the NL... add the fact that our pitchers seem to love the game he calls, and with all of our young talent coming up, stability at the catcher position is BEYOND important..

The lack of any potential replacement in the farm also made this deal a must..

In the end, is 12 million a lot of cheddar for Miggy? Yes, but did we OVERpay for him? Absolutely not!

How much do you think the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, et al would've been willing to pay him? My guess: more than $12m/year.

When did the Diamondbacks have the budget of those three teams? I am happy Montero is signed but in my opinion they spent too much and I would of preferred four years, not five. This team has other positions to fill and they need money. Looking at the Cahill trade, it has turned out to be a bad trade. Parker is just as good and will probably be better, and he is much cheaper. They could of used that extra money, especially now that they are giving all this money to Montero. I am afraid Towers is going to do the same thing to the minor league system like Byrnes did. I hope I am wrong.

It always cracks me up when fans bitch about their team paying "too much" for a guy who is in his prime playing years... The only concern I have about Miggy is that he's never played more than 140 games in any season... Of course that was last season and so for a long stretch now, he's been incredibly durable. He can flat out hit and he is one of the top catchers in throwing out potential base stealers... Also, he's a great clubhouse guys - his teammates love him.
I'm totally cool with this signing..

At the very least it makes the Dbacks look good. Shows that they care about their own and are willing to pay players who perform well. Was he a little overpaid? Yeah, I think so. But he probably would have commanded even more if he made it to free agency. And the Dbacks are REALLY thin at the catcher position.

Good for Montero i gues they realized how much value he had once he got injuried.
I am happy for him! Do they get like weekly or monthly checks does anyone know?
Lucky bastard for how much money he is making. Id play the five years as hard as i could than retire and enjoy life! I hope he doesnt take it easy now that he got paid.

Who is bitching? I'm glad they signed him but all I said is I believe they gave him too much and for five years. I really don't think he will put up solid numbers all five years due to his age and position. A four-year contract would of made more sense, especially due to Miguel being a catcher.

It will be interesting to see who will be the shortstop starting next year. I really hope Towers doesn't trade any more of the young pitching studs they have for a veteran shortstop, but who knows what his plans are.

Still think this team has enough talent to get one of the two wild card spots and maybe Montero will start to hit now that he doesn't have to worry about negotiating a new contract.

It ia very rare these days that when you sign a 28/29 or 30 year old to a 5 year deal or more, that he puts up "solid numbers" each year of the contract... For Miggy, if he could average .270 or so, hit 15 dingers and 80 or so RBI over the first 4 years of the deal, and maintain his pace for throwing out runners, I would say this contract was very well worth it...particularly when you add in his presence in the clubhouse...

Henry Blanco has been more than a positive influence on Miggy since he joined the team. Last year Miggy started the season with 10 errors and then suddenly only ended up with 1 error the rest of the year. He has become a very good defensive catcher and batting numbers aside this is more than a positive. He has become as stated one of the top 3 or 4 catchers in the National league if not all of MLB. There is no one out there that we can afford that is much better than what he has been. He has the respect and confidence of all of our pitchers and that in itself cannot be overstated. I was thinking more in the range of 10/5 but Towers and the rest of the front office have decided that he is worth more than that. They know him better than I do so I won't argue with them that he is worth more than that.

Montero has improved dramatically since the middle of last season. Is he worth 12 mil per year? I don't think so. However his defense is better. The pitchers seem to trust him better. The only thing I don't care about him is his hitting. The big swings he's making are nothing more than him trying to hit a 5 run homer and we all know that's not going to happen. If he'll just shorten up and put the ball in play then good things can happen. I'll never bitch about a player putting a ball in play and still getting thrown out at first. But if you put the ball in play you have a better chance of something good happening that if you strike out. Adding this to J-up he's been putting the ball in play more and striking out less. With any luck this will help him start to dial in and allow him to become more productive.
