I understand the concept of getting a guy who can fill the stands, but I'm not really convinced it should be the primary criteria. Allen Iverson puts people into the stands, but I would not want him on my team. After watching some of the Pacers - Celtics matches, I have real questions about Paul Pierce. Everyone talks about how exciting Ginobili is, but he only shot 41.8%.

This is not an arguement against getting a top player like Kobe or T-Mac; just that I not value flash as much as being a complete player.

You lost credibility with me there if you REALLY believe that Eisley and not White will be gone. :D

I would say there is easily an 85% chance that if one of them was gone, White would be the one.

hey chap

i wouldn't be too surprised, if both white and eisley are gone this offseason.
i still can't believe how they managed the luc longley deal. hope for
similar things to happen this offseason

but you're chap. and make that 85 a 93 to 95.

I would be pretty surprised if both are gone. Eisley's contract is a real beast.

In response to Chaplin and ASUChris.

Yes, I do think TMac is an elite player and one of the top few in the NBA. When I talk about a franchise player, I refer to a player that can take good players to a new level like Jordan, Shaq, Magic, and perhaps a Kevin Garnett. There are very few of these players that ever come along. I consider Kobe in this category or soon will be.

Would Tmac make the Suns an awesome team... you bet. And I would love to have him on our team, but not at the expense of our nucleus. I'm just not sure he has the competitive spirit combined with talent that Kobe possesses.

This is not a knock on TMac. As I said, very few players have this exceptional ability.

Kobe has the eye of the tiger, so to speak.

Personally, on a talent level, I prefer Kobe because we most likely wouldn't have to sacrifice our current talent.

On the other hand, I also think it's funny how halfway through last season, many people were calling for Shawn's head, now he is indispensable. If I had a choice between Shawn Marion and Tracy McGrady, then to me, the choice is extremely easy. I love Shawn when he plays well, but especially last year, he was never consistently good. Tracy McGrady, though, had a streak of 20-plus games going (I think that was it--we paid a lot of attention to it because JJ was 2nd in the NBA in that respect back in January I think).

Shawn Marion isn't going to fill an arena. Tracy McGrady will--and hence is worth more money. And that's what it's about anyway.

I'm not completly sure that McGrady will fill AWA by just being a Sun. Regardless of who they bring in, the bottom line for filling seats comes down to W's and L's.

I definitely don't agree with that. If Kobe or McGrady were here, we would see a huge spike in attendance. Guaranteed. Winning helps, but getting there is half the fun, IMO. :D

I think the problem with Shawn is that he isn't a go-to guy at the end of games when you need him.

Tmac, or Kobe, those are guys you can count on to get their own shots when they need to. Shawn still can't take guys off the dribble when it counts.

Kobe would bring a bigger spike than Tmac, and both would of course bring more peeps in...but if they started to lose, it wont matter much who is playing...fans in Arizona don't like to watch losing teams.

I guess we will disagree then. I think that if McGrady were a Sun, and the team played 300% ball again, you would see a lot of empty seats in AWA. I know that I would not be paying money to see a crappy team, regardless of who was on the floor.

Lets not forget that Tracy McGrady aside from being a great basketball player also is very active in supporting the community.
Remember when he visited the boy who was shot at by "the sniper"?

He is among the top players in jersey sales I think.

And a top allstar vote getter.

Maybe he will not completely sell out AWA. But he will surely create a lot of excitement with Amare and raise attendance.

I do agree that he would help create a buzz, which in return would help out attendance. My only point to this is that if this team starts losing on a consistant basis, then people will stop coming to the games. Most of this is moot, due to the fact that if the Suns can aquire McGrady, then I believe that they will not be a losing team.

Just think we wouldn't have to worry about retiring Penny's Jersey.

If I have to choose Kobe or T-Mac, Ill take Kobe, he is and has been the best player in the NBA for a few years now. When ever LA is in trouble Kobe can take over the game like no other player in the league...

Kevin Garnett? I find it strange that you included him instead of Tim Duncan.

If Marion was the only good player on the team and got a touch on every offensive possession, I think he would have simular stats to McGrady

Statistics obviously do not tell the entire story. As far as I'm concerned the only thing Shawn Marion does better than Tracy McGrady is rebound. IMO the difference in their defense is completely overblown. Offensively the Phoenix Suns would be a much, much better team.

Eisley may be gone, but probably not his contract. :(

The Phoenix Suns are not going to cut Howard Eiseley. Are you suggesting a buyout? I guess that's always a possibility although I've got to admit that I still don't understand completely how they work under the current CBA.

Give me a break. Tim Duncan is the best player in the NBA and has been for about the last four seasons. In fact for the last three seasons he is and far and away the best player.

And that's how I feel about that! :)

If we were to trade Marion for TMac and didn't get Kobe.

That makes some other FA options pretty interessting for us like Darius Miles who has played very well for Portland and is a better defender than Marion.

Granted playing in Portland probably means it would take a good contract to pry him away but he would be a good fit along with TMac, Amare, JJ and a FA center.

Obviously leaving Tim Duncan out of this reference was a mistake.

I guess it's a tribute to Tim Duncan in many ways. He is so consistently excellent and low profile that his superior performances are almost taken for granted. Indeed he is a franchise player!

if you check the suns clubhouse at espn.com, the TMac story by sam smith is referenced. i'm to the point where i'm 80% sure we're getting either kobe or tmac, like it or not. the chances of both are still quite slim, but you never know.

It's referenced because Sam Smith wrote the piece for the Chicago Tribune, AND he's a writer for ESPN. It doesn't mean that there's anything substantial to it.

Sam Smith is a joke. He is easily the worst NBA sportswriter. He has based his entire career on speculating ridiculous, crazy, and most of the time she is one trades.
