Most likely no Comp picks this year.

Simple reason why, we signed more qualifying free agents then we lost, end of story.

Green, Besiel, a FB(cant remember his name that went to the Lions) - All getting cut from the teams they went to really hurt us.

Terrelle Smith?

Thats it. If he or Green stayed on the teams that signed them through the whole season, we would have probably recieved a 4th rounder for Antonio Smith.

But again we signed more free agents then we lost so we are not in the Comp pick disscusion. That is rule number one.

Joe is it pure "ins & outs" that determine whether or not a team gets awarded one or more comp picks?

Or is it the total value of the guys who leave vs. the total value of the guys we add?

That said - there are 2 things that are guaranteed to happen to the Cardinals each season:

1. The Incredible Vanishing Comp Picks

2. The Even More Incredible Melting-Away of the Salary Cap (Humongous in Feb/MIA in May).

It is this first and foremost rule of comp picks. You must have lost more qualifing free agents then you gained. There are rules for who qualifies and who doesnt, for example Rolle doesnt count becuase he was cut. If you gain 5 and loss 4, no comp picks, no matter what the values of the contracts are. If you sign 4 and loss 4 then you can still get a comp pick if total values are higher in the lost free agents category, but nothing higher then a 7th rounder. If you gain 4 and loss 5, then you move on to step 2.

For example this year since we have lost one free agent in Dansby and have signed zero free agents, right now we are getting a comp pick in 2011(if its still there in the new CBA). But if we sign Foote we would probably get a 7th rounder. If we also sign Porter then we signed more FA's then we lost and get jack squat.

Or is it the total value of the guys who leave vs. the total value of the guys we add?

This is step two and where the forumla gets crazy. First you try to match like players gained versus lost, thus canceling each other out. Then you work off of who is left to determine what comp picks you get. Granted that is the simplistic view of it but that is the gist.

Just pointing out that Porter would be a great addition comp-pick wise, since he was a released player, and wouldn't count as a qualifying free agent.

Will there even be compensation picks without a CBA next year?

Good point, I forget he was cut so he doesnt count towards the equation. Good catch.

Even if there is no CBA next year and the Owners call a lockout the Draft will still occur and Comp picks will still be announced. If a new CBA is agreed upon is where we are not sure if comp picks will still be in the rules.

IMO I think they should get rid of the Comp system all together and just go to a straight 8 round draft, that is still the 256 rookies that they want drafted every year. Not sure why they need to do some weird formula that pays teams for lossing their players.

We'd have comp picks if we were the Cowboys. They could spend a vintillion dollars in FA, and still get comp picks.

I know its fun to say, but its just simply not true. The Cowboys have never recieved a comp pick if they gained more qualifing free agents then they lost.

Then how is it, in years past, that they would sling all kinds of money around, sign tons of free agents, and still get not just comp picks, but high ones? I find it hard to believe they were losing more FA than they gained.

In 2006, 2007 and 2008 the Cowboys had no compensatory picks. In 2009 they had a fifth and sixth round pick which they got from Jacques Reeves and Julius Jones.

Not sure if that qualifies as high picks.

Thanks for doing the research for me.

Also on the comp picks I really dont know as to what we will get. T. Smith was cut but he was on the team for 8 weeks. Cant remember the forulma but there is a cut off date and what happenes if a player is cut before or after that date. The one that I am worried about is M. Bisel He was on the Chiefs then cut then picked up by us. Does he count for just when he was on the Chiefs or both? What is the salary cut-off to qualifiy is another question i dont know.

Huh, time was that they used to get that treatment. I KNOW they USED to get it, but I guess those times have changed. For the better!

My guess is that the "small market" teams prefer the comp picks system because it potentially gives them access to better young cheap players.
The Steeler get 3rd rd comp picks when the Porter's leave via FA making big time bucks.

It allows teams that prefer to build through the draft instead of FA to have better picks then just an 8th rd pick.

Again just my guess.

And yet the Cardinals never exploited this system. It isn't like we haven't had good FAs leave over the years, we just always seem to sign a bunch of scrubs that qualify instead of signing guys who were cut and building through drafts. We'll see if Whiz changes this.

When Whis took over he had a TON of work to do with the roster. Yes Green did help improve the talent level but there was still a lot of upgrades and depth needed. The Belly needed a lot of work. Also starting the change from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. Whis also talks about character, toughness and intelligence or in other words his kinda guys. Heck every new HC turns over a ton of the roster their 1st year or two.

I expect we start to see the comp pick process to start working for us after this offseason.
