The Ada High School girls golf squad didn’t plan to have a week off. But head coach Ron Anderson doesn’t necessarily believe that’s a bad thing.

The Lady Cougars were originally scheduled to host the Class 5A Preview Monday but due to the wet weather that soaked the area over the weekend, that event has been pushed back to Monday, April 14.

Ada competed in two tournaments last week and finished third at the Southern Oklahoma Invitational in Duncan and seventh in an absolutely stacked field at the 6A Regional Preview hosted by the Winter Creek Golf and Country Club in Blanchard.

The Lady Cougars will play on back-to-back days next week. After playing on their home course next Monday, Ada will travel to the Firelake Golf Course in Shawnee for the Tecumseh Girls Invitational.

So now, the Ada girls will get the opportunity to fine-tune some things before diving into next week’s busy schedule.

“Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I think a week off for practice is good before it gets real busy. We’ll have another week off after regionals before the state tournament,” Anderson told The Ada News.

6A REGIONAL PREVIEW

Ada went toe-to-toe with the best teams in Class 6A in cold, wet and miserable weather at the prestigious Winter Creek course. The tournament was delayed over an hour due to rain and subpar course conditions.

Ada was the lone Class 5A team in the field and finished seventh out of 17 teams and was ahead of 15 Class 6A schools.

“I was proud of the girls for battling the competition plus the rain, cold and wind,” Anderson said. “We should feel proud finishing ahead of so many 6A teams.”

Anderson said he put the 6A Preview on the schedule so his team could play a round of golf on the nice Winter Creek course, which ended up not being so nice due to Mother Nature.

“The reason I scheduled this tournament wasn’t for the competition, it was for the girls to experience playing a very nice course. However, that didn’t work out so well,” he said. “Winter Creek is one of the best and toughest courses in the state. The course is long and exhausting just to get to some of the next holes. Add the soggy and cold conditions and that’s a recipe for very high scores.”

Ada finished with a team score of 397.

Ada’s playing partners included 6A juggernauts Edmond North and Norman North, who took down the top two spots in the tournament.

“I think the girls thought I was losing my mind when I scheduled this tournament loaded with 6A teams. and going into it, I had some doubts myself after we discovered we were matched up with those two directional schools,” Anderson said. “This was a great experience to play with such good players.”

SOUTHERN OK INVITATIONAL

The Lady Cougars finished third with a score of 390. Host Duncan won the event on their course — at the Duncan Golf & Tennis Club — after shooting a 342. Plainview was runner-up at 390, just five strokes ahead of Ada.

“So far this season we seem to be in a holding pattern of third and fourth-place finishes. We can most certainly shoot better than we did, but those are some very good teams,” Anderson said.

Freshman Liberty Bridgeman made another strong run at a medalist crown, before finishing second with a score of 84. Another freshman, Lily Thomas of Duncan, won the individual championship with a score of 77.

“Liberty is just a few strokes away from winning one of these tournaments. If she continues to remain positive like she is, she’ll get one,” Anderson said.

Senior Brooklyn Black finished in a tie for 10th place with a 94 and sophomore Paisley Poe fired a career-best score of 99, good enough for 13th place.

“Paisley shot her best round of the year and with hard work, I could see her scores continue to get better,” Anderson said.

The Oak Hills Golf & Country Club will be the site of a Class 5A Regional Tournament on Wednesday, April 23.

“The Lady Cougars will be attempting to win their fourth straight regional championship,” Anderson said.
