Of course I couldn't let this Movie-A-Day go by without bringing up Swingers, my 2nd favorite movie of all time, following the LOTR trilogy (I know the last movie isn't out yet, I don't care, I love them anyways).

Swingers stars Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn, and might be one of the best guy movies ever. I know the movie played at the Valley Art cinema (the Harkins on Mill) for a year straight and every weekend it got a ton of business...that's pretty amazing.

The story basically starts out with Favreau trying to get over his girlfriend of six months, and he's moved to LA to become a comedian. He can't get over it, so Vaungn takes him to Vegas and the movie just rocks from there.

There are so many good lines from this movie..."You're so money", or "Mikey's the big winner", etc.

The scene when he's calling a girl back after meeting her at a bar, and gets her voice mail is about the funniest thing you ever saw. And pathetically sad at the same time.

I loved this flick, it's one of those cult movies that you just see over and over and over...

This movie is money, baby.

That scene you mentioned with the phone call really isn't funny to me, it is one of the most excruciatingly difficult scenes to watch.

It's funny how this movie is equated with Vegas--Vegas is only in the beginning of the movie and only for about 20 minutes or so. But when anyone thinks of Swingers, they think of Vegas... :D

As a side note, you'll remember that Jon Favreau and Ron Livingston play golf at a little golf course--that course is on Los Feliz and the 5 freeway here in LA, and it's basically a 9-hole course of nothing but par-3's. It's a great course, and one of only 2 I've ever played on.

Very true Chap, it only starts in Vegas...but it's a huge part of the movie.

I guess for married guys it doesn't have the appeal on first viewing, but viewed by those of us that were single at the time, it is dead on and shows what life is pretty much like in LA (and as a single male).

Yeah, it might appeal to them more, but I think most any guy will remember how it used to be being single and trying to date girls.

Plus, a big part of it is about the effects of a long-term relationship with someone, which I think everyone has probably experienced at some point.

One of the best movies ever. That phone call scene might be the all time most difficult to watch scenes ever. I was actually going to call my band "doubledown" because of that movie (several other bands are already using that name  )

"What, were you gonna step to him, snoop dog?"

"Like House of Pain was gonna do anything"

...and just to make a slight correction, Mike. He was broken up with his girlfriend for 6 mos but they were together for 6 years I believe.

That's right...it is my favorite movie, but I haven't watched it in about...6 months I think :)

It's funny, everybody I talk to about this movie has their own favorite line in the movie.

My personal favorite is when they're golfing on the aforementioned course when I believe Ron Livingston (not sure) is putting. He leaves it well short, and says 'Get There!' like it's going to coerce the ball in the hole. It's such a short mundane line but i can't help but chuckle everytime he says it.

Other favorites from friends:
"Look Mikey, Wayne Gretzky's head's bleeding"
"A Cavalier......It's red... it's a red cavalier"
"Like Cypress Hill was going to do anything"

Any other favorites?

"Why didn't she call?"

"Hold on a second Voltaire" (or something like that, from the waitress in Vegas)

"Is he cute Mikey?" to the pizza guy

"Made" which aslo stars both vaughn and favreau is pretty funny as well. not as good as swingers but it definitely has its moments. i think my favorite is the cameo from screech.

I love that movie but Vince Vaugns' character is the biggest @$$hole I've ever seen in any movie. That's the only time I've ever wanted to punch a character in a movie.

"You're a bear, and she's a bunny, baby!"

Love this movie. Chap's right - it's a great depiction of single male life in L.A. If you or a buddy of yours has just gotten out of a long term relationship this is the perfect movie to watch.

Super flick!

"You always double down on 11!" "Obviously, not always!"

"He's all growns up! He's all growns up! And he's all growns up!"

I thought the scene when they're in the trailer hooking up is funny as hell!

Shane, get yourself to the video store and rent this flick!

"Well we're not in Kansas anymore."

"It was one of those after school specials, you know, Don't do Drugs, Jenny Eat Something or something like that . . . "

"Oh, that so bad. That's so bad." - one of the Vegas bimbos after Mike comes out shaking his head that there was no message from his ex.

One of the all-time classics period. Nail LA dead on for that age group also.

Favorite sequence of lines:

"Mike, don't ever call me again."
"Wow."

The answering machine scene kills me, such pain - reminds of the scene in FARGO where another Mike meets up with Frances McDormand and he breaks down. "I always liked you Margie. I always liked so much!" "Okay, Mike" "I'm so lonley". Such utter scenes of desperation - and director's and writers who nailed them.
