Plot Summary: Shadow of the Vampire is a film about the making of a German all time classic silent horror-movie from 1922 called Nosferatu-Eine Symphonie des Grauens (Nosferatu-a Symphony of Horror). The production of Nosferatu had to deal with a lot of strange things (some crew members disappeared, some died). This movie focuses on the difficult relationship between Murnau, the director, and Schreck, the lead actor.

Hmmm, a theme seems to be developing...

John Malkovich was great in this movie. I also do love the original movie "Nosferatu" and I thought William Dafoe did a magnificant role in portraying that character. There were so many cool things about this movie - from the acting, the sets, the costumes, etc. I thought it was one of the better movies that year.

The only thing that I really didn't like about the movie, which I don't think was true, if it is, please correct me, is that Max was portrayed as an actual vampyre-like being and not an actor.

This kind of was confusing to me as I thought it was going to be a pretty true story about the film.

Did Max really think he was a vampyre or is this just fiction?

If I remember the "real" story correctly - he was an extremely odd guy and probably thought himself to really be a vampire. He would show up to the set already in makeup, etc. Very strange guy.

That is NOT true. Max Schreck really was an actor, and even though he immersed himself in the role, he was no vampire. The ending is completely fabricated.

There's a section that talks about Hollywood Stock Exchange producers--I'm in that section. There are two groups--I forgot which one I'm in--but it's actually the opposite of the one I really was in, the DVD people screwed up.

Chap - I understood it to be that he was so involved an immersed in his role that people actually were questioning his sanity.

I'm not saying he was sane, I'm just saying that he was never a vampire. And he certainly didn't kill anyone.

Oh - right, vampires are ficticious. But I think he may have made people question his sanity if he immersed himself too much in the role. You know - like those gaming geeks who really think they are their character. :doi:

BTW - I really liked this film too. Except for my take above.

Willem Dafoe was really creepy in the role.

I really liked this movie except for the presence of Cary Elwes. His German accent in this movie is on record as the worst accent I've ever seen in a movie. Luckily the performances of Dafoe and Malkovich balance it out.
