I'm covering for Mike this week--the next time we have a no-show, he'll cover for them.

Here's a fan favorite, and one of Travolta's best movies. Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the movie is a hilarious look at Hollywood from the point of view of a mobster played by John Travolta. Gene Hackman, Rene Russo, Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo, James Gandolfini and the great Dennis Farina make up a cast that is nearly perfect.

The film takes place mostly in Los Angeles, where Chili Palmer (a "collector" from Miami) ends up after pursuing Leo Devoe, who has run off with some of his boss's money. Once he gets to Hollywood, though, the movie business takes center stage, and he ingratiates himself in with b-movie producer Harry Zim. What follows is a winding plot of trying to make a movie starring egomaniac Martin Weir (the "Shorty" from the title), while at the same time, trying to resolve Chili's pursuit of Leo and Harry's debt to drug dealers who had invested in a shelved movie and want their money back.

I personally thought this movie was long and boring. I didn't like it. Maybe I should watch it again.

I just watched it. I really liked it. The writing was very clever and funny. The subtle humor, such as Weir pulling up in the same exact minivan as Chili, was great. Gandolfini was excellent as usual.

I liked "Get Shorty" but the quasi-sequel that came out about a year ago was really dissappointing. At least for me.

The best is the setup between Chili and the retal car agent.

All right. Thanks a bunch.

- Where is it?
- Right there.

- What is that?
- It's an Oldsmobile Silhouette.

- I ordered a Cadillac.
- That's the Cadillac of minivans.

Are you kidding me?

La Tijera Car Rental is right over there,

but I think all they've got
is Rabbit convertibles.

I guess I'll take the Cadillac of minivans.

And then later when asked about his car he calls it the Cadillac of Minivans. Classic.

There is a deleted scene to Get Shorty during a production of one of Gene Hackman's horror films. The director is Ben Stiller.
