Cast: Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Pena, Kris Kristofferson, Joe Morton, Ron Canada, Matthew McConaughey, Miriam Colon, Clifton James.

Synopsis: John Sayles' murder mystery explores interpersonal and interracial tensions in Rio County, Texas. Sam Deeds (Cooper) is the local sheriff who is called to investigate a 40-year-old skeleton found in the desert....As Sam delves deeper into the town's dark secrets, he begins to learn more about his father, the legendary former sheriff Buddy Deeds (McConaughey), who replaced the corrupt Charlie Wade (Kristofferson). While Sam puzzles out the long-past events surrounding the mystery corpse, he also longs to rekindle a romance with his old high-school flame (Pena). Sayles' complex characters are brought together as the tightly woven plot finally draws to its dramatic close.

A first rate mystery as well as a fascinating look at the changing demographics in south Texas and the different ways people in America cope with the racial differences they encounter. John Sayles does a terrific job of weaving the past and present together to tell this story. Great performances by Chris Cooper and the very underrated Kris Kristofferson, who does a fantastic turn here as the menacing Sherriff Wade.

I just picked this up from the library. IMDB has a rating of 7.6, which is pretty high. I'm looking forward to watching this.

I just watched it. I understand why this was nominated for best screenplay. It’s a very intricate story with well developed characters.
