Murder in the First

Tagline: One was condemned. The other was determined. Two men whose friendship gave them the will to take on the system.

Cast: Christian Slater, Kevin Bacon, Gary Oldman, Embeth Davidtz, William H. Macy, Stephen Tobolowsky, Brad Dourif, R. Lee Ermey, Mia Kirshner, Ben Slack, Stefan Gierasch, Kyra Sedgwick.

Plot Summary: Based on a true story that occured on the 1930s. A young, inexperienced public defender is assigned to defend a hard-core prisoninmate accused of committing murder while behind bars.

Trivia: While filming courtroom scenes, the location was hit by the 6.7 Northridge, California, earthquake. Kevin Bacon was handcuffed to a large table, he took refuge underneath, while an enormous crystal chandelier swung overhead. The warehouse studio was later condemned.

According to an interview, film director Oliver Stone claims to have auditioned for the role of D.A. William McNeil, that was ultimately given to William H. Macy.

Some great performances by a great cast. Compelling story (loosely based on the real events of Henri Young's life).

Great and seriously underrated movie--Kevin Bacon's best performance and the score is hauntingly beautiful.

Yeah, very loosely. Most of the movie is historically inaccurate. Makes Henri Young into some sort of hero when he was really a scumbag and convicted murderer and the "cruel and unusual" punishment he received at Acatraz was largely a figment of the writer's imagination.

Almost as bad as The Birdman of Alcatraz that made Robert Stroud a sympathetic figure when he was also a murderer, a sociopath and pedophile.
