Thought I'd start off the week with one of the best Sci-Fi films ever.

Based on a Philip K. Dick novel (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep), loaded with a great cast, and directed by Ridley Scott - what's not to love?

Synopsis: In the year 2019, ex-detective Rick Deckard is called out of retirement to track down and eliminate a team of humanoid androids that have escaped from an outer space mining colony and have taken refuge here on Earth. During his search for the fugitives, he discovers some disturbing secrets about the future plans of the androids' manufacturer, the Tyrell Corporation.

The memorable cast includes: Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, William Sanderson, Daryl Hannah, Brion James, Joe Turkel, and Joanna Cassidy.

Hard to believe this came out all the way back in 1982. It's visual style has influenced many movies and even found it's way into our culture (cyberpunk genre).

One great thing about this movie is that it fits into so many genres: Action, thriller, drama, suspense, sci-fi, crime noir, cyberpunk, etc.

I'm curious, for those that have seen both versions, do you prefer the original theatrical release (1982) or the director's cut released in 1993? I had the pleasure of seeing both of the versions at the late Cine Capri in Phoenix. I still prefer the original theatrical release, but have talked to many people that prefer the director's cut. I just wish both were available on dvd (currently only the director's cut is available).

Its hard to say. Had I seen the directors vut first, I might have had a REAL hard time figuring out what the hell that movie was about. I was also like 13 when I saw it for the first time and watched it about 20 more times with the narration before the directors cut came out.

Brilliant movie, but I cant say whether I like one or the other more. Having seen the narrated one first, it makes it easier to truly enjoy the film without it, but I dont know about vice versa...

Good choice, Brian.

Great point, Dave.

One funny thing: Ford claims to have been so against the narration aspect of the film that he says he did a "cheesy" job on the narration hoping it would be cut out.

I'm like you - glad that they released it with narration first.

Let me go on record and sacreligiously say that I've never been enthusiastic about Blade Runner. I always thought it was too slow and while I've grown to appreciate the grungy look and the acting, it never really enthused me.

That said, I like the implications in the director's cut, and I'm not really a great fan of narration.

One of my favorite Sci-Fi films. I love this movie! Even normally crappy actors like Daryl Hannah, Sean Young, Brion James & Rutger Hauer are all really good.

I thought there was genuine chemistry between Ford and Young. M. Emmett Walsh is also great as the police chief.

The look of the movie is also fabulous. Very believable as a dark, depressing future L.A.

Definitely one of the best films of the genre.

PS - Great score by Vangelis as well.

I am with Chap a little on this...I watched it, and man, afterwards I went "YAWN" and wondered why it was so loved by people?

I guess for it's time, it was a breakthrough movie, but to me, it's nothing like Star Wars was as a "breakthrough" movie.

Maybe I need to watch it again, but I just didn't get it.

OK, I am going to watch this for the first time.

Which version should I watch? I am guessing Theatrical version the first time around.

I wouldn't waste my time with either, if I were you. I'm glad I'm not alone in the whole "I just don't get the hoopla" camp.

#101 on the IMDB.com top 250. Gotta get it off my list.

Sci Fi noir film about batter than human humans? Come on! Its an amazing film!
Now, if they were made of batter, then it may have been more captivating. I thought it pretty much sucked, sorry. And I love Harrison Ford.

movies that elicit this kind of response aren't worth seeing to me:

My time is precious :D
You have over 10 K posts. Can't be that precious. You are just having a bad day. The movie has some good parts.

Hey, now. I AM having a bad day, and the "time is precious" was sort of tongue-in-cheek (as I expected some sort of comment about my post count), but I really didn't enjoy the movie at all.

I also wanted to rip my eyes & ears out by the end of The Thin Red Line, as well as punch myself in the face for having wasted 3 hours of my life on that, and most people on here liked it...so take my disapproval with a grain of salt. ;)

Never apologize for your poor taste. It just makes it that much more obvious! :p

Citizen Kane was an ungodly long movie to me, so I know what you are saying.
