MU hoopster shot in ankle
By MIKE DeARMOND The Kansas City Star
The Fourth of July holiday ended with the frightening bang of a gunshot for Missouri basketball player DeMarre Carroll. At 1:30 a.m. today, outside the Tropicana Bar in downtown Columbia, Carroll was struck in the ankle by a bullet fired from what police said was a large-caliber handgun.
Carroll was treated and released from a Columbia hospital. And Missouri head coach Mike Anderson — who is also Carroll’s uncle — released a statement Thursday morning.
“With this being an open investigation there is a lot of information that we don’t know at this point in time and certainly can’t comment about,” Anderson said. “Our main concern is for the safety of the victims involved, including DeMarre, but it sounds like everyone is going to be fine.”
A 23-year-old man, whom MU officials said was neither a current nor former athlete, was also shot, in the side, and was receiving treatment for a wound that police said was not a life-threatening injury.
Early Monday, a suspect in the shootings — said to be a black male in his early 20s — was being sought, and police were in possession of shell casings recovered from the scene at 808 Cherry.
Carroll is a redshirt junior who is 6-8 and 225 pounds and figures to be a key cog next season. MU officials said he would not be immediately available for interviews about what transpired.
Anderson said: “This was a scary situation for DeMarre and one we will help him through. We are just very grateful the injuries suffered by everyone involved don’t appear to be life-threatening.”
Carroll played at Vanderbilt two seasons — averaging 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds in 2005-06 — before transferring to Missouri and sitting out a redshirt season in Columbia.
