Things are getting weird at Arkansas and USC.

Sources: Mustain to transfer to USC
By Joe Schad
Special to ESPN.com

Former Arkansas quarterback Mitch Mustain plans to transfer to USC in the second week of May, sources close to the quarterback said Wednesday night.

Mustain has attended USC's spring game and practices and is currently attending classes at Arkansas, where the semester ends May 8.

Mustain, considered by some the nation's top recruit before last season, enrolled at Arkansas in large part because coach Houston Nutt hired Mustain's high school coach, Gus Malzahn, as offensive coordinator.

But Arkansas didn't utilized Malzahn's no-huddle, spread offense and he left for Tulsa, where he'll be co-offensive coordinator. Mustain, who was benched at the end of last season, then announced his intention to transfer.

Arkansas won the SEC West last season and began 10-1 before losing the final three games of the season.

This week Nutt released a statement denying rumors he was pursuing other jobs and did not promptly respond to hate e-mail sent to Mustain. He also denied a rumor that he had an affair with a local television anchor.

I was going to say it's amazing Carroll can keep track of all his talented players but it turns out he can't.

He was asked on Monday who was his starting Tailback if the season started tomorrow, and he said Chauncey Washington. Today's LA times has a quote from Washington that he's skipped too many classes and has 6 weeks to make it all up or he'll be ineligible next year, for the 3rd time in his USC career!

Luckily they have a slew of young RB's to replace him.

Am I the only one who wasn't at all impressed with Mustain last year?

How many true freshman QBs are impressive against an SEC schedule?

I just remember in one game that the analyst, think it was Bob Griese, was just going off on how bad Mustain was, bad footwork, bad mechanics, arm didn't seem strong, locking on his first option etc. He was pointing out how for all the rumors of Mustain being unhappy, he was doing nothing on the field to justify more reps.

I just remember thinking man with that run game it was surprising how bad Mustain looked throwing the ball after all that hype. Figured his arm would look better.

We'll see but I think he'll have a hard time supplanting Sanchez, that kid has a very strong arm and will have 2 years in the system as a backup when Mustain is eligible.

Mitch may have 2 major flaws. Bad career choices and inflated sense of worth. Reminds me of a kid named Brian Fortay. Hyped as a future HOF QB out of high school. Switched schools 3 times ( including U of Miami ), took bad advice from his father, and flamed out at Rutgers.

Mitch was supposedly going to Notre Dame until Arkansas hired the kid's high school coach. My guess is he'd have transfered from there too.

Arkansas is a mess in most sports under the ageing AD Frank Broyles but I belive he's retiring this year.

From what I've heard of Mustain, he was way overhyped. He was a product of his high school system and beneficiary of great WR talent more than anything else.
But who knows, I'm sure all the talent at SC could make almost any QB pretty darn good.
