Problem: I am on a wireless network in my house coming from my roommate's room. My personal computer says I have signal strength and am connected but my internet does not work (says 'finding site' for awhile then comes up with 'unable to connect' BS). The same thing happens with the wireless connection that I have on my laptop. Any suggestions? The morons at Cox Communications say it's my router but I figured I'd ask around before spending a bunch of money on that. Thanks.

It's Cox, they suck. LOL! Happens to us too. One day, the internet will work but the Cox POP server won't, the next day just the opposite. Then they'll both work fine for awhile, then all of a sudden, one of them will screw up again. No idea why, they just do. Hopefully some techie genius can help!

You may just be getting interference, but we can test that....

Step 1 - Run this speed test

You can have a very strong signal strength but still have a poor connection. You don't have to register for anything, this just measures the speed it takes your browser to load a small java appelet

here are my results as a comparision, you most likely won't get any better than this:

Para funcionar la prueba, chasque simplemente encendido el acoplamiento y seleccione un sitio dela fuente para funcionar la prueba de. Buscará Java instalada en su computadora y entonces descargará yupload archivos pequeños para probar la velocidad de su conexión

To function the test, chasque simply on the joint and select a place giving it source to function the test of. It will seek Java installed in its computer and then will discharge upload small files to test the velocity of its connection

Just because you can't figure out how to check your home network doesn't mean you have to call me a geek.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHH see I was thinking NOT to chasque simply on the joint and also not to place giving it source to function the test of.

Thanks Djaughe!!!!!

I really do not know what causes it but I was having the same types of problems... I turned off DHCP on the Router and assigned IP addresses to all of the machines putting in all of the required information (DNS server addresses and such). I have not had one connection problem since.

The only thing I can figure is that using dynamic wireless routing it can not resolve the DNS Server address... At any rate for whatever reason, it worked here...

I have no idea what any of this advice means because the only things I know how to do on my computer is type amd find porn.

My internet still doesn't work when my router is plugged in. Yet I'll unplug my router only and I get service, albeit very slow.

Anybody? Bueller?

Sorry it took me a while to get back I was watching Episode VI on DVD. :p

It was working and now it is not? Is it possible your roommate turned on encryption or MAC filtering?

Here are some trouble shooting steps to check your IP address and connectivity. Let me know if they are not clear or you get strange results.

You also may just reset the power on the cable modem then on the router, that is if Cox has not had you do this already.

Ok first check your IP address

1.Start: control panel: network.
you should now be in network connections.

2. Double click on the network connection. Then click on the support tab.

It will show your IP address. If it is 169.254. something or 0.0.0.0 then you need to get a valid address for the router.
If it is 192.168. something it is a probably a good address skip to step 4.

3. Click on the repair button.
you should get a good 192.168.0. address. If not let me know. (It is possible you will get a 192.168.20. or some other third number if so you must match the first three numbers below)

4. click Start:Run

5. type "cmd" sans quotes.

6. at the prompt type "ping 192.168.0.1"
it will send out data and wait for a reply. If you don't get replies it will say "destination unreachable" of something like that. you have a wireless configuration problem with the network.

7.If you get replies type "ping yahoo.com" If it says destination unknown you have a DNS problem.

8. type "ping 66.94.234.13"
If you get no reply here you have an internet connection or routing problem.

good luck Mao, let me know.

My PC had some type of virus or corrupted file on it and I'm finally back to working on it's network problems.

I did this and i receieved four out of four replies, which I'm guessing is good.

7.If you get replies type "ping yahoo.com" If it says destination unknown you have a DNS problem.

I tried this and it said that it could not be reached and to try something else.

8. type "ping 66.94.234.13"
If you get no reply here you have an internet connection or routing problem.

I also received no replies here. I also ran a network diagnostics thing and it read 'failed' on something to do with DNS. Thanks for your help.

Hmmmm..

Sounds like the wireless network is working.

Sounds like a DNS issue if you can't find yahoo.com. If you get your DNS from your router and it does not have the correct addresses (or has bigger issues) then you may have this problem. The fact that you can't ping it by IP address would further seem to indicate a router problem most likely having to do with the automatic addressing (DHCP) provided from the router.

Sounds like setting a manual address may be in order.

Go to the connection properties then properties for TCP/IP. If it is set for auto (DNCP) then change and manually put in these settings.

Set a manual IP.
Something like 192.168.0.50 (the last numer can change but it should be between 20 and 254)
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1

The DNS addresses are 68.2.16.25 and 68.2.16.30.

Try these settings and let me know how it works.

Also, if there are any wire-less devices as in telephones or microwaves near the router ,it will cause interference. I had the same thing happen to me with my Linksy router and I moved my phone to another room and have had no problems.

Has your roomate changed the Wireless SSID (default is linksys) or the wireless channel or have you not set these correctly?

If you're not familiar with this, have your roomate go into the admin function and look under the wireless tab. It should show both of the above settings.

Best bet is to remove and reinstall the linksys wireless software. When you restart, XP should automatically configure your settings for you.
